Hello people.
I have a question regarding sockets. I have read the info on how ilvl works but since I am not the brightest tool in the shed, maybe someone can confirm or deny my train thought.
The subject is a partizan that I dropped at the first level of the worldstone keep on NM difficulty and I want to socket it for my merc.
As far as I can tell, if I get it to Larzuk in Normal I Will get a max of three sockets, if I get it on him on NM it will be max (I think 5?) and If I cube it, it will be random?
Is my train of thought correct? My target is 4 for insight.
Thanks!
It doesn’t matter where you take it to socket it.
Normal, NM, Hell Larzuk quest, will always give the same number of sockets. (which is the max the item can have).
Cube recipie will be at random between 1 socket and the Max sockets it can have.
The Max Sockets an item can have is determined by the level of the item (ilvl).
The level of the item is determined by the level of the monster that dropped it.
BE CAREFUL: The level of the item (ilvl), is NOT the “required level”, that is written along the other stats on the item.
That is level your character needs to be, in order to equip it.
For Partizan if you look Arreat summit it says max sockets: 5. Meaning that i will never give you 6 sockets no matter what.
But: If the monster that dropped it is low level, hence the ilvl is also low, it might not give even 5.
There is a table online, that says each weapon, how many number of sockets it can have, depending on the ilvl.
I think there is also a table online, that has all the monsters and their levels.
If you remember the monster and from where it dropped you might be able to find the ilvl.
The problem is that you can never be sure for the right ilvl. That is why people complain to blizzard, that the ilvl of the item should be visible, along with the other stats.
My recommendation is not to waste the socket quest. Because if you found the weapon in Nighmare difficulty, it might be high enough to give you 5 sockets.
I use the socket quest for items that i find in Hell and I know that they are high enough level to alsways give me the max sockets. If Partizan give 5 sockets max, I wouldn’t risk it.
Based on what you said, the chances are, that you will get 5 sockets.

Thanks for the reply friend.
I took your advice and didnt use the quest.
I cant exactly tell which mob dropped it since it was in a group of Hell witches and whatever the names of suiciders and short guys (stygian furies?) are.
I keept until I finished NM and I did cube it though and got the 4 sockets, though woot!!!

Be aware that if you want a certain number of sockets but not the maximum number, there’s only two ways to do it:
- Be lucky with drops
- use the Horadric Cube recipe to add sockets to a normal (white) item an be lucky
The number of sockets with the cube recipe is random, as you may already be aware, limited by the maximum allowed. However, this is better than Larzuk, obviously if you need a smaller number of sockets for a rune word, for instance.

Thanks m8,
I figured it as such, I used first a dimensional blade I dropped and it got six
if lower ilvl results in lower max soxx, thrn in principle you could aim at getting the item at a certain ilvl range and then go for socket quest.
however, this seems highly impractible I guess…
Yeh, it is a bit. Took my chances and cubed the polearm and got lucky on my first shot.
This does work, but you basically need to know exactly where to farm lol
