I wonder what skill means to you in these games. Please give your definitions and examples.
To me, knowledge of game/boss mechanics is not enough for skillfull playing.
It appears to me that skill requires that this knowledge is exploited in a way that is not possible for most players. Like you need to do it often to be able to do it well. Eg craftig requires no skill but only knowledge. Throwing poison spears and kiting enemies into the poison requires some practise to be more successful more often.
When playing against bosses in d2, i would still say that encounters with the act bosses can be very different for different players. In general but also for act bosses, speedrunners seem to have not only some additional knowledge but also appear to be more skilled in playing the game and fighting act bosses.
How is this in D4, poe? is there some clear didference in how much skill/practise is required? I only played poe for like 30h and it appeared to be less demanding compared to d2 up to this point to a degree that I stopped playing it.
knowing exact hit timings of monsters, dodging patterns. basically getting hit the least. i would say is a skill. proper positioning in large packs so you don’t get surrounded.
which monsters to target first for fastest clearing. (shamans, deadly archers etc) knowing map patterns for getting places quick.
early game sorc - how to teleport safely - massive skill.
then there’s just knowledge of good items to use to make your time easier. like slow weapons on merc and stuff… before end game items anyway…
The only skill this game requires is patience

ok. is there skill required in other arpgs in your opinion then? and how so?
Id say repeating the same thing add nauseum 5 gazillion times is not skill, as has been said its patience.
The only skill this game has is figuring out an effective build and implementing it. The rest is RNG and repetition. However this is already covered by the hundreds of guides out there. I am a textbook example of this. I just spend a couple days reading the guides, asked a couple questions here, and I am rocking in hell right now with little to no effort.
Ofc someone might say that this is laughable and that the real game is on 8 players and hunting the ubers etc etc. Still I believe even with the added difficulty and quite possibly the need to cooperate effectively it still boils down to (already known builds), RNG (items) and patience (farming to get said items again and again & learning the bosses patters/exploits).
IMHO these games, dont demand high skill levels in general since by their very nature the enemies you face are flat out ‘scripted’ in a way to offer specific challenges. Once you figure it out (read about it somewhere) the game is virtually done for.
And nothing of the above is bad or wrong. ITs the way it is and I like it that way.
Leveling & farming? Dedication, determination, willingness to be the very best.
Speedrunning? Anything #BadHabits said.

Skill in a Diablo game is “the ability to sit there for 19 straight hours without given up. Then do it again tomorrow.”
And you know what, I’m fine with that. Hell most of the kiddos these days can keep at one task for more than half an hour without going all ADHD.
My skill as a hardcore barbarian player has been developed and honed over years of self found play throughs.
There are a few things at play. Game doesn’t require a huge amount of skill, I would say it requires above average gaming skills in particular need to be able to kite & dodge but a good chunk of the this game’s difficulty is around understanding the different mechanics and avoiding fails like dumping all into str/dex/energy, putting 1 into all skills and maxing only the weapon masteries on a barb for example, trying completely obscure builds like a 2 handed melee sorc, etc…as a noob these will pretty much be instant game overs at some stage of questing until you respec and learn better…
D1 & d2 are arpgs that really punish you if you don’t know what you’re doing. Average gamer today cannot handle such depth hence why d3 and beyond removed attributes, skill points, item stat reqs, etc…
