Simple endgame system instead of Nightmare and Hell could fix D2

How about instead of playing story 3 times on single character we get some endgame system after beating Act 5? Maps like PoE, something simple like rifts or endless dungeon from Torchlight 1 could be cool here too. Mobs scaling is already here in form of Terror Zones and they were very positively received by players.

Teleport even in current form would lose value as speedrunning acts or rushing to Andy/Meph wouldn’t be a thing anymore. No more weird and repetitive strats like Lower Kurast, Travincal, Pindle runs.

Just a simple hack n slash gameplay of clearing map to level up and get loot so how it should be in D2 as well.

Also those endgame areas would have proper random immunities (or none at all) so Hammerdin wouldn’t be that op as well.

Devs could select specific maps for pool so there wouldn’t be annoying tight corridors, increase density, add some modifiers etc. It would open a lot of possibilities for further content additions.

Sounds like something that could be done, for a new game.

Diablo 2 Resurrected should be left alone. It’s a remaster…. Besides, I don’t trust new Blizzard to make changes without further screwing the game up.

Ye I feel you, I was against such ideas as well but at the same time D2R is already much different and original D2 is still playable. It got flooded by bots to play those repetitive strats, it kinda always lacked endgame, people moved on to modding for more content and Path of Exile took over the genre… If any time and place would be great to improve D2 it’s in D2R. There is potential but well obviously it won’t happen so I’m just like “what if” here. They’re focused on D4 and Immortal now.

Would like to see the rift system from D3 come to D2. Endless challenge and difficulty would be awesome

Rifts in D2? Thank goodness that will never happen.

I know it sounds bad but the truth is it would bring people back to D2 and made game fresh again. Do people really want to do Andy runs with Blizz sorc for another 20 years? Could also fix a lot of issues I described above. Of course only if Blizzard was interested in improving D2R then they should consider it but a lot has changed already compared to original D2.

Rifts are just an example. It could be anything, just to replace this nightmare and hell system and make it like more modern hack n slash.

D3 and PoE also transformed from playing same acts multiple times on one char and people were very happy about it.

Some people are against some for it. But even if a rift like scenario were introduced. It would only bring people back for 1 ladder, but they’d quit before ladder was even halfway over.

Also I know some D2 mods added mapping system but it still works after beating 3 difficulties from what I saw so I’m not a fan of that. I specifically have in mind to replace nightmare and hell here.

D2:R doesn’t need to be made more modern hack and slash.

D2:R is a REMASTER. The original game was the root of inspiration for the vast majority of ARPGs that followed.

Making D2:R into an amalgamation of what certain players like from various ARPGs that followed would mean that D2:R would cease being a remaster, and instead be an entirely different Frankenstein of an ARPG.

Rifts would be a bad idea as they favour movement aka teleportation and would increase the need of fast tele. We already see tz tombs not being played without teleport.

They should rather introduce a Tristram sized map with endless mob spawn with increasing density and mob strength. The basics are already coded via throne waves or ubertrist spell spawns from ubers.

Throw in lots of trash mobs and some big baddies inbetween. No need for mobility skills and more use of cc/tanks.

Ofc you have to remove/nerf mosaic first

Dear blizzard, this is NOT the Way!! We do NOT want grifts or anything endless scaling “endgame”. Please ignore this

You can’t speak for everyone. Obviously this thread was created and similar has been created before so there is some disagreement here. I do not like endless scaling endgame because that makes you lose the feeling of how powerful your character really is. That is my biggest problem with D3 that if you play gr 10 or 100 it doesn’t matter. As you are getting gear the bar rises and leaving you in somewhat the same relative powerlevel.

It’s true but they moved away from this difficulty system as an improvement. D2 always lacked endgame. D3 adopted it at first and resulted in again broken and unfun strats like doing only chest runs to Azmodan.

Immunity system never worked as intended either and Sunder Charms don’t fix it. In new endgame mode they actually could make them work properly or just remove this mechanic, depending on what players would want.

I don’t think need for teleport would increase. You have to kill most of mobs on the map but Andy/Meph/Baal runs you pretty much skip whole maps.

There could and probably should be the limit so I agree for proper builds balance.

TZ’s should’ve never happen and everyone who want something like rifts in D3 should play D3, on top they don’t know how neither rifts and D2 works.
D2 was an shining exmaple for many modern ARPG’s and I don’t see the point in making D2 fit into modern gameplay. Then just play modern games and don’t crave for D2 to change lol.
D2 is awesome, 99% of ideas and suggestions in this froum sucks so badly and proves that people don’t have a clue about the game’s spirit and fundamentals.

Shame yourself.

This is hilarious when you consider immunes.

Well you can also see it as a moment where you unlock the full power of your character with infinity and sunder. I do think immunities are a poor implementation tho.

After killing Baal in Hell, the endgame is further character empowerment/item grailing and PVP.

Besides, Diablo 2 isn’t the only game on the face of the Earth. If you think otherwise, you need to diversify your game library.

Where this coming from? I made enough comparisons to other games to let you know I play more than single game. I could say the same about you if you’re against improving D2 and think it’s perfect and only one true hack n slash but I’m not here to make it personal, just share some ideas.

A RPG doesn’t need an endless loop of activities after the main storyline is completed. If you’re bored of the game, play a different game.

Outside of QoL, D2 doesn’t need to be improved upon, it’s fine like it is. If you want “new”, then go play “new” games.

I love D2 mostly for nostalgia and atmosphere but it’s far from fine and there’s a lot to improve.

  • Bad melee builds,
  • bad trading in weird websites,
  • lobby filled with spam links,
  • repetitive endgame with unintended strats like bugged Meph runs favoring one class with teleport and ranged spell,
  • unbalanced itemisation with Runewords domination,
  • unbalanced immunities making fire builds bad but Hammerdin op in general Hell playthrough,
  • bad class balance with 50% of characters in ladder being Sorceress.
  • constant rejoining and remaking games to reset mobs
  • debatable multiplayer experience, people get angry if you join them cuz they want to solo p8
