Why is it such a difficulty to host a few dozen players during ladder starts?
Servers shouldn’t be this instable.

I haven’t noticed anything. Couple glitches in the matrix but pretty smooth for me.
The gameplay was fairly smooth for me as well. Maybe a few ping spikes every now and then, which is typical for ladder opening night. I’m only a few short hops away from “backbone junction” in the US, so my connection has always been rock solid.
Been getting disconnected from server on both PC and console all morning. NA servers for PC.
Last night was laggy but at least there were no disconnects.
That’s a sign that there is packet loss somewhere between your computer and the server. Diablo 2 has always been highly sensitive to packet loss. Even just 1% packet loss will eventually result in being dropped from the game.

Plug your regions IP into WinMTR and click Start. Let it run for a good 20 minutes, then check which hop in the chain has high ping spikes and/or any loss. Your router will be at the top of the list. Blizzards network will be at the bottom of the list. The numerous hops between your router and Blizzards network will be in the middle.

You can run two instances of WinMTR to test both server IPs at the same time.
Yeah, if you’re also having trouble with the bnet app, there’s likely a routing issue between you and Battle.net servers.
Could be a number of causes. Severe weather downing the main fiber line your connection to bnet normally went through, a dummy with a backhoe cutting the fiber line, etc. And whatever alternate path that the traffic is trying to reroute can’t handle the traffic for some reason.
i did this (just used command line tracert) and see that a few dropped along the way. will have to see the route from my connection at home. thanks for sharing the NA server IP, Jedi.
