Same Character Name for Ladder?

Are we allowed to create a character with the same name in the ladder game mode as non-ladder?

I like to keep the same set of character names, and I forgot to test this during the PTR.

Trying to figure out if I need to burn my high level characters or if I can use them for increased Trophy room space (Level 1’s can’t wear gear sadly).

Doubtful, as end of ladder pushes them to the same pool. I would say there is very little chance you can do that.

Thanks, well; it’s a matter of timing right? if they can co-exist until the ladder merges with non-ladder then I’d rather keep them for now.

If they are going to prevent me from creating a new character on ladder of the same name, then I need to cleanse.

I think the same name convention is only for differing accounts. Else, how is the database going to differentiate between two CraticSorc names on the same account?

Ah, well, I’d assume they have a CharacterID of some sort, and game modes and Ladder have a GameTypeID, IsLadderFlag, it’s just down to how it is enforced / validated.

I see no reason why they couldn’t co-exist (until the merge), just looking for confirmation from someone who tested on PTR?

Thanks again for the responses!

Duplicate names between separate accounts are now allowed because they are appended with your battle net ID, thus making them unique still.

If you made two of the same name on one account, they would both be appended with the same battle net ID and thus not be a unique name.

I suspect the DB probably uses this name + battle net ID convention as a primary key / major point of source identification.

I wouldn’t think ladder and non-ladder namespaces / name pools will be separated, much like hardcore and softcore namespaces are not separated, despite being separate game instances where neither character would be capable of interacting with the other.

I don’t know the answer to your question for sure but this is my thought process in the event no one else can tell you for sure :relaxed:

I guess we will see in a few days regardless. Good luck!

Thanks! Now that I have thought on it a bit more, they might have implemented restrictions because of how the old Naming systems worked in relation to local files (.ctlo,.keyo files) being uniquely named.

I used to use the “rebirth” option in D3 which was really nice because it sent all the gear from that character to mail to be sorted, and made that character available for season as a new Level 1.

I think my best course of action is just to prepare for the worst. Since I’m not speed-running or competitive for ladder start, I will clear my similar named characters of gear but not delete them.

I’ll test this upon ladder start.
