Mechanics, Jewelers and Artisan’s are NOT valid for runewords, DONT USE THEM. They are still classified as magic items and NOT base.
i tried 2 grey name (socketed) for Leaf and it did not work.
have screenshots
Please upload them if you can.
Same here, I tried to make Leaf runeword with Tir + Ral on a grey 2 sockets staff class (Gemmed Clasped Orb ) in Kurast and didn’t work
An orb is not a staff when it comes to runewords.
they told they bought/had normal not magical item and after runewordingit became blue instead runeworded
They most likely bought a blue item with sockets
I have same problem. I had normal crown with 2 socket space. I try make Lore runeword (ort + sol) and instead Lore it become mechanical. I had this crown in my shared stash from over the month and it was normal item, not blue.
I am little color blind but not that much. Btw. there were no prefix on it
It was always mechanic’s, adding runes won’t change the item from normal quality to magic quality.
Then why always it shows as normal socketed item?
There are items that are normal quality and have sockets and there are items that have an affix like mechanic’s which gives an item sockets. The runewords will never work in the item that has its sockets granted by an affix.

I know this. But when Item is magical then have blue name color and prefix in his name. In that case it is “mechanical crown” or sth like that.
I my case color of name was grey and item have name saying “crown”. After adding 2 runs name color change to blue and prefix appear. There is problem somewhere.
- item always was magical and pretend to be normal socketed item
or - item never was magical but after my atempt to make it runeworded bug show and make it magical.
And now I see nobody believe becouse it easier to not believe. Nobody have it recorded then problem doesn’t exist I see.
Where are you players getting your Socketed items from? The OP said they bought theirs from Fara in Act II, but did not say what Game Difficulty they were on.
FYI
You can only buy Normal items from Vendors on Normal Difficulty up to, and including, ilvl 20.
- Act I Normal has an ilvl cap of 12
- Act II Normal has an ilvl cap of 20
- Act III Normal has an ilvl cap of 25
- Act IV Normal has an ilvl cap of 36
- Act V Normal has an ilvl cap of 45
On Nightmare and Hell Difficulties, from ilvl 25 on, Vendors only sell Magic items.
The next time you make a Rune Word, take a screenshot of the item before you add any Runes. After you try to make your Rune Word, if it turns into a Magic item, take a screenshot of that. Then post the (before and after) links here in this thread.
By the way, I could be mistaken, but isn’t a Crown ilvl 29?
- normal/base item text color must be white/grey. blue, green, yellow, gold is not allowed, it won’t work. buying those items from vendors after normal difficulty is impossible, they don’t sell them.
- “superior” items are also normal… it’s the item name that matters… not the text in blue below the item (like "enhanced damage/defence% text in blue of superior items)
- number of sockets must be exact, no more no less
- runes must be put in the order
- Lo and io are different runes
- certain runewords don’t work on certain items (ex: Insight only on Polearms, not on Spears)
I bought item on normal difficulty, IV act. It was just grey. Crown have 2 sockets.
They do not sell grey items in act 4
In my case every requirements were fulfilled.
Crown appear as normal item. Text color was grey.
Crown was bought in vendor in ACT IV on normal difficulty.
Lore runeword is for helmets, and crown is helmet.
Lore is made from 2 runes and my crown have exacly 2 sockets.
I use runes ORT and SOL.
I put first ORT and later SOL.
After this I get Crown with mechanic’s prefix with ORT and SOL runes in it.
Probablyu there is a bug, and when Item have only prefix which give item sockets only Item appear as normal.
then why it looks grey?
Quoted from reddit: The complete overview guide to shopping in Diablo 2 and PoD. ~ u/Hastmannen
- Act 1 normal has an ilvl cap of 12
- Act 2 normal has an ilvl cap of 20
- Act 3 normal has an ilvl cap of 25
- Act 4 normal has an ilvl cap of 36
- Act 5 normal has an ilvl cap of 45
- Furthermore, vendors sell normal and socketed items up until ilvl 25+ (clvl 20+). This means that A1 and A2 normal always only sell normal / socketed items. After ilvl 25 vendors only sell magic items and no longer normal or socketed quality.
This is bug report. I report bug.
In IV act I bought crown with 2 sockets with grey name which later appear as magical.
This Item should appear as magical when I see it in shop.
This item should have blue name instead of grey.
This item should have preffix in name, but it haven’t.
Fix this bug and don’t blame me you made bugs.
Why color code was wrong? Why Item name did not show preffix?
Can you explain? Or you want just argue with me?
As regular player I don’t need to know technical nuances, when was created color code, which should be superior. Item is white means normal. Item is grey means socketed or eterial. Item is blue means item is magical. Yellow means rare. Etc.
Item name also should be correct.
Don’t blame gamers for bugs you (developers) created.
EDIT. I report bug becouse I want best for this game. and now every have problem with that I see
