I got the runes to create Voice of Reason and when I input the runes in the correct order per the wikis into my mace it failed to create. I double triple checked i didn’t put them in wrong and that it was a white 4 slotted item i had just used the Larzuk quest to create the sockets. So now i’m out of a Lem/Ko rune as well as my quest reward in Act 5.
Exactly what kind of “mace” did you use, and do you have a screenshot?
I do have a screenshot. How do i post one here?
You have to upload it externally and then put the link here using preformatted text (Ctrl+E).
But if you just tell me what weapon base you used I may be able to give you the answer you need without it.
Battle Hammer was the base item.
Battle Hammer is not a viable weapon base for Voice of Reason. Hammers are their own subsect of the Mace family. I discussed this already in another thread here:
So even though the wikis state it requires a Mace and the Battle Hammer says it’s a Mace class it won’t work because of some extra subclass that isn’t noted in the game tooltip? Not sure how that makes any sense on Blizzard’s end. I’m pretty angry that i wasted all that on a paper weight now.
If that is the reason it didn’t make then thank you for letting me know. and explaining that.
Problem is you only took the Wiki at face value and didn’t dive deeper. If you dove deeper, you would have seen the part where they talk about the different subsects. You would have also see the weapon type pages for Hammers and Maces, and seen they don’t have the same runewords listed, in particular, you can see Voice of Reason is absent from the Hammer list.

In addition, Arreat Summit which is the original online resource from Blizzard for D2, even explains what “Maces” means when it refers to them in runewords. (At the bottom below the list).

Notes:
*Maces: Maces doesn’t mean all Mace class weapons. As the top of the page says: Maces = Mace, Morning Star, Flail, and Exceptional/Elite versions.
However, I won’t disagree about the in-game tooltip thing.
I looked at https://diablo.fandom.com/wiki/Voice_of_Reason_Rune_Word
and https://diablo2.diablowiki.net/Voice_of_Reason
they didn’t mention any of that so that’s nice to see it on another site after the fact lol.
There’s a lot of little niche things like that in D2, so I would be more wary in the future of doing your research prior to pulling the trigger on things. You can always ask a vet too if you want to make sure.
Is there any way to get the runes back or am i SOL in that regard?
Nope, no way to get them back. You can use the Cube recipe for removing sockets (1 Hel Rune + Scroll of Town Portal + Socketed Item), but you’d only get the base item back with open sockets without the runes.
