I tried making rune word for swords Kings Grace.
I socketed the 3 ruins in the correct order Amn + Ral + Thul but all it gave me was a sword that had the individual rune bonuses.
Is it an Artisans sword? (blue magic item) If so, that won’t work for rune words.
Rune words only work in white/grey base items with the exact number of sockets for the rune word. Rune words will not work in socketed magic, rare or unique items.

has to be a white socketed item. commonly found with loot drops.
blue socketed items like from the shop or loot will not work unfortunately.

Luckily you only lost a few common runes. People have lost much rarer runes for the same reason. 
If the item’s name is in Blue, Yellow, Green, or Gold text, you cannot use it to make a Rune Word.

technically white is a shade of grey, as is black.
grey is not a shade though it is a color

I’m thinking that technically it’s more correct to say that grey is a shade of white (or black), since white and black are the opposite poles on the same scale. Black is the absence of white, not grey. Not that important, though.
