Regarding VPN users

Will D2R get us restricted for two weeks for using VPN or will this be allowed?
More and more PC users are using VPNS for safety reasons.

Let us know blizzard.

From what I know, this should not be a problem for D2R.

From all the MVP quotes I remember seeing, and I think an interview, since it is tied to your blizzard login, as long as you can still access that your all good. Previous VPN restrictions were due to people being able to spam the login without need to go through battle.net account which is much more controlled.

VPNs will always be associated with cheating/botting, and especially so in context of D2.

Even if some people have legitimate reasons for using VPNs (and there most definitely are), the amount of people doing so is small enough for them to outright block it or get your account in trouble depending on policy per game-basis.

I may be ignorant because I never use a VPN while gaming but do any other blizzard games restrict VPN usage?

In D2 today, if you use VPN you get immediately temp banned.

However, this might be a D2 specific restriction due to bots/cheats.

Not sure about other games/servers.

D2R will have global servers, so you can play with anyone from anywhere in the world, even though I am sure that if you view your open public games, the server will show “local” games prioritized, yet allow you to join someone across the globe if you get a game-invite or know the name and password of a game that happens to be located somewhere far from your own geo-location.

In theory its possible that your ISP has some funky routing from your house to the blizzard server, and then to the server hosting the game across the globe you intend to join. Now, with VPN, you may or may not get “better” routing depending on the vpn-server-routes and then maybe even reducing “hops” and replacing them with faster more stable/reliable routes.

I think Blizzard’s original global servers will be fine for D2R, especially if you live in large urban centres across the globe or countries with strong general infrastructure (ie Europe).

Oh ya but that’s old battle.net, I mean anything on the new one. If nothing blocks everyday use with VPN’s, why would D2. It was a protection mainly due to the restrictions in their battle.net client, could they upgrade it, sure but that’s D2R  I scrolled the D2 forums a couple days ago and read up on the VPN ban issue quite a bit hehe.

There is nothing worse than getting banned for 2 weeks because you forgot to turn off your VPN. It’s happened to me several times.

Why would you want to use a vpn to game? It increases latency so much. Just tunnel the game.

VPN usage was restricted due to advertisement spam bots in game and in the public chat/trade channels. The problem was getting so bad towards the end that if you tried joining a public game with player slots opened, spambots would pop in, regurgitate a wall of spam on the screen and leave in 1/4 of a second. If multiple player slots were open, they’d be popping in and out so fast that your screen was a wall of rolling text. Plus if you didn’t restrict your messages to friends only, you’d get spammed with whisper messages even after they left.

They first tried IP restrictions, which worked at the start. Then the bots quickly caught on and started using VPNs, so the IP restrictions didn’t work anymore. They tried permanently squelching cd keys from being able to chat which had a minor impact, but eventually the bots would just get new keys. Blizzard was backed into a corner on this one, so they had no choice but to hammer anyone they could detect with a VPN connection with a two week restriction.

Since Battle.net play in D2:R is tied directly to your Blizzard account credentials, VPN usage doesn’t matter any longer, so they shouldn’t restrict for VPN usage while playing D2:R on Battle.net.

Most of the time people were restricted for VPN usage was because they either were not aware that VPNs were not allowed, or it was accidentally left on.

Like people have said I expect no issues with VPN now that D2R is on current bnet. All current bnet games like D3, OW and others allow VPN.
