While a loot filter would be very useful for experienced users (which are a fair majority here), it has some problems. People could potential see different stuff.
- Users which do not use it for any reason (due to inexperience, ignorance, etc.) are placed at a item grabbing disadvantage regarding party play.
- The grabbing-advantage power users are getting from a lootfilter grows, the more items they already own because they can filter out more stuff, thus only seeing that very few beneficial items.
What I propose:
a) Display only important items directly on the ground
b) Make less important items accessible via a “show more” menu which is always at the bottom of the dropped items. Accessing this menu would open a mini four column list: Lesser potions, Lesser gems, cracked weapons+armor and lastly scrolls.
Benefits:
a) reduce clutter on the main body of the items
b) giving access to everything, old gameplay is untouched
c) no picking disadvantages, everybody sees the same
d) no configuration effort on user side
Drawbacks:
a) One added click/hover just to see some of these items
That would improve QOL quite a bit. What do you think?
I mean, when loot filters were put in PoE, I didn’t have a problem immediately catching on to it. I mean learning the game is just part of the process. This would just be another aspect in how to learn the game.

poe has group loot options diablo2 doesn’t have any.
True. But there most certainly should be group loot options in D2 as well. Besides, any group can decide on having such rules anyway.
Also, the issue I was speaking to was learning how to use item filters. Which can be learned in solo play just as easily.
in path of diablo u just pick one of the published loot filters and play with it. and then if there are any changes u want to make u can edit the file or talk to the dev to see if they are willing to consider adding those changes.
i run “kittengale” filter for path of diablo, its a modified version of “darkgales” filter which is a modified version of another person’s.
you dont really need to know anything about coding loot filters, you can just download one and then if u dont like it just keep choosing different ones until u find one you like… and learning how to edit a line or two isnt hard.
the only thing that shouldn’t be done is you should NEVER be forced to use someone else’s filter.
there are countless ways to abuse that…
the least of which is not finding an item because the person who’ loot filer is choosen didn’t want to show it.
there is a bunch of scary malicious stuff u can do if u can control another players filter
( i know, because i know what happens why filters dont work properly
this can includes but is not limited, every item being hidden, every item showing gibberish, to crashing their client people when u drop a specific item, or even crashing their entire computer, and can even include malware depending on the restriction blizzard has for "forcing the loot filter of your choice on others)
as long as everyone else the loot filter of THEIR choice… everyone can see things exactly how they want.
NEVER use another filter unless its trusted. ANY option that forces other players to use “your” loot filters is a million times worse than no filter at all
thats why i am VERY proud that my filter is extremely popular.
the inexperienced players using loot filter will learn and adjust, and overall be thankful in the long run, trust me, no one is running around eagerly waiting for fire, gas or oil pots to drop, once you get to endgame picking up normal pots and seeing arrows and bolt, the list goes on… its too much. so much so that it block other potential good loots. its baaaaad
