I played Diablo 1. Loved it. I played Diablo 2. Loved it. I HAVE PLAYED SINCE DAY ONE. I know. OG AS F. And I only played hardcore but that’s besides the fact. I’ve played for all these years. I am 38 years old with a wife and two kids and a career I’ve been in 14 years. I’m not a loser.
Now listen up. This game was the best pre expansion. In my opinion. It was challenging then. If you’ve never played this pre lod version I highly recommend it. But here’s the catch. To get this version you need old cds.
THIS WAS CLASSIC.
I’d like to see players with a similar view unite to make “classic” “classic”
1.06b was the last classic patch. Make pre expansion this game.
This is the game. Diablo II

Well, there is already the “Classic” version of Diablo II.
I could perhaps support a Classic Diablo that is version 1.06b and so is no longer connected to changes in the Expansion Diablo.
That way we don’t keep running into the problem that changes needed to balance stuff in the expansion break things in the Classic version.

Thank you for your support.
Isn’t that what the pre-expansion button is for in the character creator?

It isn’t the real pre expansion. It’s a weird mash up of things that carried over. It is by no means the same.
You can’t but mana pre lod
No respects
No synergies
Gambling very diff
Prefix suffix levels and rolls
Very different game.

Something to consider though is that there may be things that should be kept. For example, I think a lot of Classic Diablo players would like to have the Shared Stash available.
Perhaps use 1.06b as the base and then consider what if anything since then ought to be kept in Diablo II Classic.
I do think it would be pretty awesome if they added different patch “branches” for us to play, such as 1.06b, and/or 1.09. It wouldn’t take away anything from the game, but it would take some investment/effort on their part so sadly I wouldn’t count on it. Good ideas aren’t really allowed to be implemented at the husk of what was once Blizzard anymore.

1.06-1.09d was the golden days of D2 and I am glad that I experienced it on bnet.
Ww barbs and bowazons were so effective.
Only thing I didn’t like was that leveling to 99 was way too easy, especially with cows.
I remember when 1.10 came out and I made my usual ww barb and my reaction was

I support this!
Flamespike the Crawler is the most notable change for me; I feel that pack should have been kept on non-LoD and I played enough pre-LoD to very well remember it! I don’t quite get why it had to be removed (you fall for it once then you prep like any other encounter later
).
I got CDs, my old keys, the 1.06b patch, a Glide wrapper, and I’m ready to go for a playthrough!
On Windows 10:
- There’s a website that has a bulk archive of Game.exe CD protection removed as-per patch 1.12’s official removal; the one for Classic 1.06b works perfect
- D2’s DDraw nor D3D modes worked (crash on start, looks like can’t hard-set 640x480); Glide wrappers were all fine (Sven, nGlide, dgVoodoo)
- Saves are in the D2 Program Files folder; with UAC by-default you may need to run D2 as admin or change the save dir (looks possible from registry)
I’m used to 1.09 for cool things like being able to stack all points into Skeleton on Necro and get away with it
Edit: Sven’s Glide wrapper had Game.exe running in background after D2 exit, and dgVoodoo was different with minimizing (doesn’t hard-minimize with win key; goes windowed alt + tab; can be fullscreen’d with alt + enter). nGlide seems to be the easiest config-wise and works (app res, Vulkan).

Do people not realize how much work it would be to create these separate patch variants while maintaining all the same bugs/exploits/vulnerabilities fixes?

2 years later…
Another thread Necromancer raising the dead.
I would be willing to pay extra for it. The main problem is that blizzard failed to properly store the old source codes and would have to re-engineer from the cds.
would it be better in your book if they create a new thread? Wouldn’t make a difference at all, would it? They (Espionage) did write some bit after all, it wasn’t just a “me 2 !!!111elevenhundredeleven1!1! lulz” after all.

CL 1.10+ is like demo mode of LoD, pre 1.10 and pre LoD is different game.
One Guy made small mod for D2R which emulate old pre 1.10 patches: no synergies, no respec, no mana, no cast delays, original monster features, old affixes for rares and etc etc. most important things for these patches, 1:1 convert from zero is no needed.

From what I’ve heard, the devs wanted to start D2R off on patch 1.05 but higher ups said no. Pre 07 D2 is a good experience and I’d fully support a D2R server with it. However, Blizzard simply isn’t going to fund it. D2R classic is less than 1% of the server population. They’re not going to create a separate server for less than 1% of the player base. Now I know what the response will be here. It wouldn’t just be the current classic population, many other players would come to check it out because it’s the original version of the game. However, upper management would definitely not see it that way. Best we can hope for is if multiplayer mods take off that we get some pros who make a as close to possible server for it.
It’s because of how classic was implemented.
If it was completely pre expansion, no synergies, no monster health buffs, I’d be playing it.
As it stands, “classic” is just all the bad things that came with LOD, without any of the good things.

It’s 1.14d classic. If you wanted to run any other version of classic D2 on D2R it would have to be a separate server or would require major code changes. My point is we know a lot more people would play if that was the case. However, based on the OG server numbers Pre D2R and the current D2R classic numbers, the higher ups don’t see it that way and don’t want to fund it.
Give us an expansion version 1.09 option.

Cuz 1.14 Classic is awfull
no, just some changes, its not necessary to be 1:1
Imagine Vanilla WoW is based on all BC or WotLK features with just disabled locations and new classes and some items, thats what D2Classic currently is.
