Random loud "static noise" during play

Hi guys,

im having a sound issue during playing D2R. Whenever i play, i get random loud “static noise” happening from time to time, generally every few minutes. It affects every sound currently being played (not only ingame sounds, but for example currently playing videos on Youtube or a Twitch stream), usually stops by itself in a short while.

I also found out i can make the noise stop by switching my sound output device in windows sound settings and then switching back again. For example im using headphones, noise appears so i switch to speakers which makes the noise stop and then i switch back to my headphones (because thats the output device i want to use) and its fine for a while before the noise appears again.

The issue appears on multiple different output devices - i tried using both speakers and headphones, didnt make a difference. It also only happens while playing D2R, no other game. I tried getting latest Windows updates and the “Scan and repair” option in the BNet launcher, didnt help.

Does anyone experience the same issues or have any tips on how to prevent this from happening? I love D2 its been one of my favourite games for long years, but this sound problem is really killing it for me, please help.

System specs:
OS: Windows 10 Pro, version 22H2
CPU: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-12700F 2.10 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070
RAM: 32GB

EDIT: Added my system specs. If theres any information that might help solve the issue please let me know, ill do my best to provide it

EDIT2: Also i remember reading somewhere here on forums the ASUS Armoury Crate might have something to do with sound bugs, i do have it installed. Could it be part of the problem?

EDIT3 (and probably the solution to this problem): WIRELESS HEADPHONES. Ive had this issue for a long time now, but recently my Koss headphones stopped working so i just went to buy another ones as usual, but this time i went for the wireless ones. To my surprise when i launch D2R, the static noise is completely gone, no audio lag, nothing. So im guessing that the game has an issue with some piece of hardware in my PC and the headphones using bluetooth instead of regular cable connection somehow goes around that issue. Give it a try, i hope it helps!

Had the same issue. Assuming you have an ASUS motherboard? I patched the bios, Intel ME, and audio firmware. Afterwards haven’t had the problem since. Hope this helps.

Yep, Asus motherboard. But i never updated bios/firmware before and after some googling, the general advice seems to be “dont do it, its probably gonna cause more issues rather than solve them”. I only have this issue when playing D2R, every other game i played works perfectly fine, wouldnt that suggest something is wrong with D2R itself and not my system? Im not trying to point fingers here or anything, just wanna get one of my favourite games to work again and honestly im pretty scared of updating stuff like bios/firmware since i dont really understand all the techy stuff that goes into it :confused: I did find the bios/ME FW version though, does that help?

BIOS version: 2206 x64
ME FW version: 16.1.25.2020

Click to Expand: The following checklist has a series of drivers and frameworks to install for this particular desktop:
1.) Install 3rd-Party Frameworks:

Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable latest supported downloads ( Install Both x64 / x86 ) -> https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist

Java Downloads for All Operating Systems ( Install x64 ) -> https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Download .NET SDKs / Runtimes for Visual Studio [ Runtime (Windows) x64 | x86 -> .NET Core 3.1 | .NET 5.0 | .NET 6.0 | .NET 7.0 ] -> https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/visual-studio-sdks

2.) Processor / Chipset:

3.) Network Adapters / Storage Devices:

I don't know what motherboard you have, so you will have to select the RST driver based on what chipset you have:

4.) Graphics / Audio Drivers:

NVIDIA Driver Downloads -> https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

Product Type: GeForce
Product Series: GeForce RTX 40 Series
Product: GeForce RTX 4070
Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit
Download Type: Game Ready Driver (GRD)

Example: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/209129/en-us/

I would go to the motherboard vendor's support website, and fetch the latest audio driver from there, or if it's a USB-based sound card ( 3rd-party, ) then it's better to visit the manufacturer's website and download the most up-to-date driver from there. If you don't have a Realtek sound card, then skip this section, although it is actually smarter to use the driver that comes from the motherboard manufacturer / OEM, as it will often be newer. Regardless of that, this will still work:

NOTE: When downloading Realtek drivers: If the Captcha contains + ( plus ) signs / operators, or a cross symbol, then you have to go back and retry the download until you get a different Captcha Code / Challenge.

Realtek High Definition Audio Codecs Software -> https://www.realtek.com/en/component/zoo/category/pc-audio-codecs-high-definition-audio-codecs-software

Realtek Audio Control -> https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9P2B8MCSVPLN

NOTE: For the audio drivers, these are generic Realtek drivers. Even if these are official drivers from the device manufacturer, it's still an integrated sound card. You should consider visiting the OEM's / motherboard manufacturer's website, and downloading the latest drivers.

5.) Optional: Check to see if you have the latest Cumulative Updates for Windows 11 Installed:

"Windows 10, version 22H2 update history" -> https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/windows-10-update-history-8127c2c6-6edf-4fdf-8b9f-0f7be1ef3562

I would also consider updating the operating system dependencies:

"Legacy Updater ( WC3 / Diablo II ) - Missing Dependencies" -> https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/warcraft3/t/warcraft-133-is-unplayably-laggy/29351/5

A quick update on my progress. While searching for solutions i ran into one which said to increase the minimum processor state setting (Settings → Power & sleep → Additional power settings → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings → Processor power management → Minimum processor state). Mine was initially set to 5%, increased it to 15%.

With these new settings the static sound didnt happen during approximately 2 hours of gameplay, while it used to happen every 10-15 minutes before. One thing that did happen was that one time my sounds went very silent for a few seconds and then recovered back to normal volume (which is about the same amount of time the static sound used to take before). So while i cant say the issue is definitelly solved because i didnt spend enough ingame time with my new settings yet, it seems like it might help. Will send update when i get some more hours in.

I would leave that at zero, and set the max to something like 75-100% ( if it’s really hot out, and you have issues with thermal regulation, 85% is better. ) Software is more affected by things like enabling USB selective suspend, and shutting off the hard drive when it goes idle.

NOTE: If you look throughout the entire power profile, you’ll find a whole host of other problems that affect games or anything else in general. This is a generic power profile that I use on my laptop / desktop. The last two lines stop the operating system from turning off the network card to save power when it idles. It does this without even warning you. Even if you go AFK for a short period of time, it does this, which can interrupt downloads, a VPN connection, or anything else that might be important.
