Question about Cold mastery

Why is cold mastery the only mastery that does - enemy cold resistance but for fire and lightning mastery it increases the damage by fire and lightning attacks and not the - enemy fire / lightning resist? Why did the devs make cold mastery the only one with - enemy resist?

1- In the original game, Cold Mastery could never break an immunity.
2 - so they designed to “pierce to the bone” rather than just deal raw destructive force
3 - By reducing enemy resistance, it allows low-damage cold spells to deal effective damage against resistant monsters in Hell difficulty.

In the original game lightning and fire could break immunity and there wasn’t infinity and stuff is what you’re saying?

No. It was just a thematic choice.

In the original game, Lightning and Fire Masteries could never break immunities nor could Cold Mastery.

The only way to break an elemental immunity in the original Diablo II was through two specific external skills: the Paladin’s conviction aura or the Necromancer’s lower resist curse

Ok thanks for clarifying that. When you said that I started picturing how the game looked with it designed that way it felt like I did see the old game how it was like this before despite the fact I’m pretty certain I never played the original I really cant remember if I did or not. I only remember playing since 1.14 D patch I believe it was? Now with all these new updates…to think they would change how cold mastery is worded now…now that it’s not the original game anymore.

yea they also added sunder charms afterwards in Patch 2.5 and nerf the cold sunders on 2.6

Patch 2.6: “1/5th Effectiveness” Nerf
To address this imbalance, Patch 2.6 implemented a significant nerf to how Cold Mastery interacts with broken immunities.

Current Rule (2026): If an enemy’s cold immunity is broken (by a Sunder Charm, Conviction, or Lower Resist), Cold Mastery now applies at only 1/5th effectiveness.

How it works now: If you have -150% Cold Mastery and use a Sunder Charm:
Monster Resistance starts at 95%.
Cold Mastery is penalized: 150 / 5 = 30% reduction.
Final Resistance: 95% - 30% = 65% Cold Resistance

Was it a thematic choice for having only the fire skill tree to have an enchant while cold and lightning there’s no enchant for those?

When D2 first released all the masteries had different effects, Cold Mastery would reduce enemy cold resistance by a multiplier and not a flat number like it currently does (so 50% Cold Mastery would reduce a monster with 90% cold resist to [90*0.5] = 45% cold resist), Lightning Mastery reduced the mana cost of all lightning spells, and Fire Mastery increased fire damage by a %, the same effect it has to this day.

When patch 1.07 (1.08 on Bnet) released they changed Lightning Mastery to increase lightning damage by a % because the mana reduction was too useless of an effect, so Cold Mastery became the sole outlier.

Immunes didn’t exist in D2 until patch 1.07 (1.08 on Bnet) with the LoD expansion, and only in patch 1.07 Cold Mastery could break cold immunes because it acted as a multiplier (so 60% Cold Mastery would reduce a monster with 120% cold resist to [120*0.4] = 48% cold resist), then they changed CM in patch 1.08 to not apply to cold immunes so it could no longer break them and hasn’t been able to since (excluding the bug in the first few months of D2R where CM was breaking cold immunes).

I get it now. Wouldve been nice to see cold and lightning enchantress to this day and change cold mastery to increase damage to make it work.

Dude the game came out in 1998…

There was no other game like it…

Killing monsters, gaining exp, levelling up… all of it was brand new.

The devs needed to round out each skill tree… enchant probably could have been any element but it fit into the fire tree the easiest.

Also… cold mastery is awesome… you underestimate how powerful -enemy resistance is.

to my surprise
since literally no one has actually given you the real answer yet.. i will.

in the original game… like pre-lod…

all 3 masteries had different effects
right now it seems like “cold” is the odd man out.. but in reality
cold has always had - resists
and fire has always had plus damage

it was lightning that didnt have + damage.

lightning had reduced mana cost of lightning spells

eventually lightning was changed to match with fire mastery ( because reduced mana cost was garbage), which makes it “seems” like cold is the “odd one”
but it was really lightning that was..

edit: nevermind dark did.. i just didnt scroll down all the way XD

People have also failed to mention that the reason why Cold Mastery doesn’t increase damage and instead lowers Resistance is because Cold Resistance is a factor in how long and effective Chill and Freeze effects are. It does more than just increasing your damage.

I never understood why they nerfed CM while Oppenheimering the 'Sin with the Mosaic.

is this a question or just a statement :joy:

Questions constructed in a sentence are followed by a question mark. Like this ‘?’

that’s really simple to understand actually

because it originally wasn’t 100% i think it was like 30% per weapon or something on ptr
when it was on ptr everyone tried it and agreed that it wasn’t really usable as a build because
everyone (at the time) agreed it would be better at 50% in each weapon so it could reach 100%

we never got to test it at 100%
and didn’t learn how broken it was until later

mosaic is (theoretically) supposed to be nerfed in some manner next time balance changes are made.

the fact that mosaic needs a nerf is known by everyone.. including blizzard
the issue is and has always been… how to properly nerf it.

and that’s something even i cant find a good solution for.. so I’m curious as to what blizzard’s idea will be

How about reducing the charge retention from 100% to 50%, and call it a day? This would at least take the build from “broken” to “very strong”.

Not having to re-charge over and over is one of the good sides to mosaic right now though.

They should make it so that martial arts charges just naturally work as though you have 2x mosaic equipped. Skills graphics should be updated and their dmg should be retuned in line with this change.

To add: Mosaic can still stay in the game as an awesome runeword, but they should remove the Diablo 3 - like effect from the item.

not only Mosaic has to be address but the synergy between Phoenix strike and the skill tree too
find a way to reduce my 40k dmg kick to 20k or somethin
