Hello! I played the old Diablo II for years when it first came out, one of the best games I’ve ever played. I never got tired of it. Now that it’s been resurrected, I’ve been enjoying it again. I decided to try Hardcore this time, which I had never done before. I knew most of the dangers going in, and I’ve lost some characters. It’s hard, emotionally, but it was always my fault and I came to terms with it and started again. I had some experiences with other players going hostile to me, but I was always able to leave the game as soon as it happened and never suffered any losses. Until today. As someone who is not even one slightest bit interested in PvP, I never really looked up the rules. I don’t think anyone who isn’t interested in PvP should have to. I’ve always been happy to help others along and give them waypoints. But in the last few days, I found my offers were generally refused. I did wonder why. But no longer. I’m playing a sorceress, and my connection isn’t the best so Duriel scares the hell out of me. I’m always afraid that by the time I load in to tal rasha’s chamber, my character will already be dead. So I was looking for help with Duriel in Nightmare, someone to tank for a bit while I loaded in. Someone joined the game, asked if I still needed help, and went and stood outside of town, offering to buff my character before we went in. Had I read the PvP rules, I would have been suspicious of this. But again, I don’t think anyone not interested in PvP should have to read the PvP rules. Turns out you can only go hostile to someone IN town, but you can only fight them outside of town. So where’s the perfect place to ambush PvP someone who doesn’t even want to fight? Someone whose character isn’t built for PvP, who’ll make a quick an easy ear? Right outside town. I was dead as soon as I set foot outside Lut Gholein. So quick he was probably using a macro, he stepped inside town, went hostile with me, stepped outside town and killed me with one blow. Now I know hardcore characters cannot be brought back for any reason. I know PvP is entirely unregulated, it’s up to players to do it. I know that most players are generous and all I’d have to do is join a game and tell my sob story and I’d be showered with gear. But I still wonder if this is really the experience any game company would want players to have in their game. I know it’s inherent to hardcore that a character you’ve spent hours or days building up can be taken away in a moment. But I simply wasn’t prepared to have it taken away by a callous other player in such an underhanded way. The benefits of playing together in this game are one of its great strengths. But stuff like this makes me seriously consider just playing on my own. I’d have stood a better chance against Duriel even with my loading times than I did against this literal barbarian. Something as simple as a 20-second delay between hostility being declared and attacks being possible, with like an on-screen timer so everyone knows when the fight begins would stop anyone from ever experiencing this in the future, regardless of the morality (or not) of individual players.
Sucks, but, that’s how it’s been since day one man.
Take your L and move on.
Move on to where? I’m not sure Diablo II is the place for me. But I love the damn game so much. I wasn’t even trying to fight.
Try SC? Or just make a password game.
Your story is why I never really cared for HC.
Does everyone here agree with Devilito? Is that the kind of place you all want this to be? Is there a valuable serious community of folks who were drawn to this game by the potential of permanently snipe-killing unsuspecting other characters that it would be worth keeping things this way just to keep them around? I’ve looked up the so-called player-regulated rules for PvP. And he broke all of them. It’s supposed to take place in Hell, in the Blood Moor. Not in nightmare in Lut Gholein. Everyone’s supposed to say go. So what do i do, report him to the PvP guild? Something tells me he doesn’t care what they think.
You made a hardcore character and got the hardcore experience. Use this experience to toughen your skin and get back out their as wiser player. Hardcore is a different ballpark and there is no hand holding.
I’m not sure I want to get back out there. You’re not doing a very good job of selling me on it either. My time is valuable and I just wasted a bunch of it on this game. Why should I waste any more. I wanted the hardcore experience. I didn’t know this was part of it. I’m not sure I want it anymore.
Its a hardcore experience. its rough and dirty, like mad max. Think of it as everyone wants everyone dead. Solo the game or only with close friends. Trust no one in hardcore. if that isn’t your cup of tea then no sweat, try different modes. Play what brings you the most enjoyment.
That sounds horrendous. And doesn’t square with my actual experience playing. I’ve been at it since the game got resurrected. This is the first time anyone’s done this to me. It’s not like you’re describing 99% of the time. Most players are trustworthy. So much so that this caught me completely off-guard. The only difference between hardcore and normal is permadeath. That doesn’t by default turn it into a 1930’s Warner Brothers gangster movie. It just raises the stakes. That’s all.
But like now I’ve told my wife about this and she’s crying downstairs. She actually said, “this is exactly the sort of attitude that allows every atrocity to ever happen. It’s not fair that people are allowed to do this to you and then it affects our lives.” I’m not even the one crying. But now what? I can’t play hardcore anymore because my wife will cry. You guys are the absolute worst.
For a true Hardcore experience, try Dark Souls 2 without a guide.
The part where that is not what I’m looking for at all. I mean if I could tell that any of you cared whether I come back to the game or not, I’d be a heck of a lot more inclined to keep playing. But if you do, I certainly can’t tell. If this is the way you like your purgatory, I hope you have fun.
Why would any of us care about your game preferences or if you decide to stay? We don’t know you and we should all be old enough to make grown up decisions. Nobody is going to beg for you to stay.
Either you learn from your experience and prepare to better yourself against the dangers of hc or you move on. It’s up to you
Yes, player killing was always part of D2R. I used to be pk myself. What you experienced was not pvp, it was player killing, its basicly killing with moment of suprise. No pvp rules are applied. Pvp rules are basicly forced in tournaments only anyway.
Hardcore is unforgiving harsh place and worst monster killing you might be player standing next to you, or even killing you with unsafe portal filled with monsters. Player killing fill well the harsh hardcore world where anything can kill you.
I wish you did read my hardcore guide before playing it . But honestly you learned the lesson and next time you will be better and prepared to not fall for obvious trick and thats what is hardcore about. If you cant deal with it, well its not place for fragile souls. Dont take it in a bad way.
If you overcome emotional impact, just create another char. Hardcore chars are played with knowing that they die eventualy.
Sorry about your loss, you can join our discord, we have decent hardcore community, i am sure you csn find there new friends you can trust:
Oooo, now I have to do homework before I can play the game. That sounds like sooooo muuuuuch fun!
Silly me. I thought hardcore was about the challenge of beating the game without dying to the game. I love tackling difficult problems. I’m not at all interested in tackling difficult people. I’m not fragile. I just hate wasting my time. And I just have better things to do. If you don’t care about people like me being in the game, pretty soon, there’s going to be no one left to pk. Sure, back when Diablo was the best game in town there was a sucker born every minute. Back then games were too full to join. This used to be a thriving place. now it’s a ghost town. And apparently you’re the reason.
I had a constructive idea just now. If having to do homework before you can enjoy the game is the problem, I could maybe solve that problem. An entertaining youtube video on the subject is something i could make, so people don’t have to slog through your guide, dig through your forums or hang out in your community in order to figure out how to enjoy the game. Maybe someone has already done that, but I don’t see you posting links to it here.
That doesn’t leave you much room to complain then, eh?
It’s mighty useful to know what you’re getting into.
Griefers are going to defend griefing until Blizzard fixes it, or they die… probably until they die.
I wasn’t looking for PvP. PvP found me. I didn’t even know I was getting into it. I suppose I should look up everything that exists just in case I might run into it someday when I’m not looking for it. That’s even more homework.
PKing in HC doesnt respect any rules. Its the jungle. The rules you are naming are rules for GM PvP. Community rules, not blizzard enforced rules so technically nothing force anyone to respect them, unless its a tournament organised by said community and you are DQ’d if you dont respect them.
I mean, report this to whoever you want but honestly, what do you expect them to do? Once again, the guy who killed you did nothing wrong in blizzard book
It’s called Hardcore… not Mediumcore.
Are you troll? Is that it? Is this just troll topic dude? You got me if yes. Well i was already suspicious ehen you said that you wife was crying… About your hc char.
If you are not trolling:
No you dont need to do homework. You can keep dying instead, if thats what you prefer.
Hardcore is about learning to stay alive and not do mistakes which you did. If you want to learn to survive, i can link you my hc guide, let me know.
