Proposal: Change Bul-Kathos' Ring from Unique to Set

My proposal: Change the Bul-Kathos Wedding Band from a Unique ring to a Set ring and make it part of the Bul-Kathos set.

Details (negotiable):

  • The rarity would stay very close to the current rarity. I don’t mean to make this much more available than it currently is. I haven’t run the numbers but I assume this is possible just by keeping the occurrences of the BK ring among set rings dropped (that are high enough level) very low. I am also not trying to affect the drop rate of rare unique rings significantly. Since BK ring is so rare, I’m guessing they wouldn’t have to be adjusted much if at all.
  • The set bonuses for the current Bul-Kathos’ set is the most difficult part. Ideally, I don’t want to depower the set by making it harder to assemble, nor do I want to change what the ring does on its own. My initial thoughts is that the swords would remain as-is and we could divide the full set bonuses among the two swords as 2-piece bonuses (and I mean divide and not distribute to keep the integrity of giving the bonuses for dual wielding). I’m OK with half of the current set bonus for 1 sword + ring though. It would be odd not to give it any full-set bonus so I would suggest adding a minor full set bonus of some life and/or a bit more strength. I don’t think the ring should get any 2-item bonus.
  • I’m also not trying to “Fix” the BK swords with this change although that discussion could also be had separately without considering the ring inclusion (cough Knockback cough)

Pros:

  1. Like set amulets, having one very rare version of the group would make these a MUCH more exciting drop. This is absolutely HUGE. Imagine picking up every set ring when you run Trav with a possibility of a BK ring? It would be just like what Tal’s Ammy does for set Amulets.
  2. It has always felt weird that it was called Bul-Kathos’ Wedding Band and there is a Bul-Kathos’ Children set but the ring isn’t part of the set. I think it would just feel more cohesive and intuitive.
  3. There are plenty of reasons to go after unique rings with SoJs out there. I don’t think this changes anything with the desire to drop unique rings.

I’m sure I missed some details and I know I’m not showing my work at all on the expected drop rates staying similar. However, I hope you understand why I would think this change would be an overall bump to the enjoyment and excitement of drops. Please help me to refine this idea.

Imagine the unique set bonus text says:

“Knockback direction is reversed”

Meaning you could drag enemies around while you whirlwind. Yes.

That certainly would be a creative way to handle it!

It’s a pretty good idea because there should be a green ring that is worth rolling for. It’s a waste of emotional potential to just have players disregard green rings.
