I bought a second copy of d2r for my son and was disappointed to find that it won’t run on the old machine I gave him. It has a 2nd gen i7-2600, 16gb ram and a 6850. I know its old but it sucks that the game won’t launch at all for me. Is there any way around it? Even if it would just play on old graphics until we can get a new gpu that would be fine.
When I launch I get an Error box that says:
Failed to initialize the graphics device. Please ensure your PC meets the minimum system requirements and your drivers are up to date.
I understand its below spec and probably won’t play super well, but I can also put to legacy graphics and run at like 720p just to get by I was hoping if it really had to be done.
I think the 6850 only has about 1gb of vram and the minimum requirement for graphics cards all have at least 2gb of vram.
not all games can be run under minimum requirements, but I’m not sure if D2R is one of them. Have you tried lowering all the video options to include aspect ratio? If the graphics card does have only 1gb vram than reducing all the settings should reduce the resources necessary and possibly be enough to run the game.
Another alternative would be setting up a VM on your machine and having your child play near you. Its much more of a pain because you’ll need to install some sort of VM program. I use VMware which does cost money, but there are free alternatives such as virtual box. However, set up can initially be complicated for people that aren’t familiar with using a VM.
Unfortunately I can’t even launch the game at all on that computer so I can’t try to adjust any settings.
I am not familiar enough with VM’s to know how to even get that configured to run with him using a separate keyboard and mouse with a VM on my computer. I actually looked into possibly doing that and getting a second key for myself to self rush but it sounded like that wasn’t possible.
Only your Graphic Card is the issue. Everything else meets or exceeds minimum requirements. You may have to drop $100ish on a new low-end graphics card.
Err…I forgot there is a huge shortage of graphic card so you probably wont be finding a newer low-end card for $100.
There should be some YouTube vids on setting up a VM if that’s something you want to explore. Configuring a VM to use a second keyboard and mouse is fairly simple since you can allocate specific USB for that VM to use.
Yeah I was just looking, appears the current card is one series to early. 6850 vs the supported 7850. Really sucks that the game doesn’t even launch though. So many other games launch, but just run bad which would be great if d2r worked like that.
I was hoping maybe someone found a way to ‘trick’ it to launch.
are you using windows 10? technically the game should support it unless this game only runs in dx12 cause the 6850 only supports dx11. I mean you can get an 8800gt to actually run cyberpunk, only a few fps but it in fact boots lol. Bad optimization would be to blame
Windows 10. It seems like they built something in to just block lower graphics so they don’t run at all. I don’t know much about dx11 or 12. I have heard of them, but that is about the extent of my knowledge.
hello I have a hd6850 also and it will not launch d2r because hd6850 cant support dx12.
I have managed to launch d2r with my hd6850 using the microsoft dx12 to dx11 developer kit wrapper and after waiting 10+ minutes to load into a game, I switched to the classic graphic in d2r and the game runs fine with the hd6850.
If only blizz let us start d2r in classic mode from the get go.
I also think that’s kind of weird…if they have the old code and allow player to trigger the classic mode, than why not just direct players right into the shifty graphic mode if they detect the company can’t handle the new graphic?
The Radeon 6850 is one generation below the minimum required generation card for D2:R, the Radeon 7850. The biggest reason why you’re going to have trouble with the 6850 is lack of driver support. The latest available WHQL driver for the 6850 dates from 7/29/2015. Sure, AMD could update the graphics drivers for that old card to make it more compatible with newer games, however, there’s no money in it for them doing that.
The rest of your system specs should allow the game to run.
I had a 6950 bios modded to a 6970… Free performance upgrade for about $90 cheaper. Thanks AMD!
Right now is an absolutely terrible time to buy a new graphics card. I wouldn’t recommend buying one second hand from eBay either, because there’s a very high probability you’d get a card that was heavily used for crypto mining, and is probably about to die anyways.
I run fine on an i5-2500k (stock) with a 1070 and 16gb ram. A 1650 Super or 1660 Super should work fine as well, but due to the current gpu market issues, I would look at used vs new. I would look for a used gtx 970, or 1060, 1070 class card whether nvidia or amd with min 2gb, 4gb or 6gb would be better. When going used I would also look around locally vs from across the globe or country. You need to see the card in a working system first. Lots of advice online when buying used components, do your research and insist on seeing the card in a running system and playing a 3d rendered game. Best would be a co worker or friend who has an unused gpu card laying around that they could sell to you.
As an IT guy that has solved these issues hundreds of times, this looks like the best idea. The game SHOULD load, since the requirements are almost met potency-wise. The lack of Dx support sounds like the best explanation thus.
This too. Drivers are a big deal, they make and break compatibilities and are key to optimisation.
Seriously? My build shouldn’t be that different from yours. i3-9100F + Rx 570 4GB + 16GB. All settings at their maximum. I play smoothly. Barely one tiny hiccup every several hours.
May be another reason there. It’s not a tough game hardware-wise, and your build is quite competent. A lot of people play a lot of games nicely with such a config.
The GTX 970 has 3.5 gigabytes of fast RAM, and .5 gigabytes of slow RAM, which causes performance bottlenecks when the video workload exceeds the 3.5 gigabyte mark.
uh i cant remember where i got it other than it was from the official microsoft site. the tool is used by game devs to test their game when it’s in the early stage (to test stability and stuff before they added dx12 support to their game). if i were u i would just google something like “dx12 to dx11 wrapper” and see wat comes out. hope this helps
