In the D2R videos it looks like the camera is locked in orthographic view? Now that the game is real 3D a remastered Perspective mode could look fantastic with extra added depth.
I’m sure they will include it… but I am also hoping we get the 3D sound and environmental audio effects that you used to need a special sound card for.
Hopefully this isn’t a necro…I just REALLY feel this point of view is likely more important than all the other QoL topics.
i totally forgot this was a thing in the old d2 XD, none of the mods i currently play support it.
lol they probably could, would be fun to see maybe once or twice but i would never play it that way. ( imagine whirlwind )
err what? There already is a remastered perspective mode in the remake. If you enable perspective under “legacy video option” it will also enable perspective in the new graphics. It also looks a lot better since 3d objects don’t get all distorted and weird with it enabled like it did with the old graphics. The effect is more subtle but it is still noticeable.
I’m not surprised something like this went under the radar tho considering how short the alpha was. Most ppl didn’t waste too much time messing with the options.
Diablo 2’s perspective mode works by skewing the isometric grid layout of the game. With perspective disabled, a grid square on the bottom of the screen is identical in size with one on the top of the screen. With perspective enabled, the grid layout is transformed from a rectangle into an inverted trapezoid where the top is longer than the bottom, but the grid remains fixed, so there will be a larger number of grid squares on the top compared to the bottom. A grid square on the bottom will appear fatter and taller than ones on the top. You’ll gain more area view on the top of the screen, but sacrifice some area view at the bottom.
Sprites are also modified, notably ground textures so they’ll match up with the skewed grid. Sprites like character models, trees, torches and other ‘pole’ type sprites only have their heights and widths adjusted depending on how far up they are from the bottom of the screen.
With perspective enabled, this gives for example the torches in A1 town the appearance of the flames ‘moving’ over the background textures, giving the illusion of depth. With perspective off, the tops of the torches do not move in relation to the background textures.
A lot of older sprite based console and PC games used a similar scheme to give games the appearance of depth, although a lot of them were not as sophisticated as Diablo 2.
I suspect they could do the same with the 3D engine by tilting the viewing angle and adjusting the grid layout.
Personally I don’t use perspective simply because of losing the viewing area towards the bottom of the screen, but I do admit it looks good and does give the game more of a 3D feel.
Diablo 2 first person would be interesting, and scary… Walk blindly around a dark corner in the sewers and get zerg rushed by a bunch of dolls. Panic shoot towards the noise, BLAM, you’re dead. Hmm… I want to try it just for the scare factor. ![]()
