Only unique character names are still allowed. With Diablo II: Resurrected, you were supposed to be able to make multiple characters with the same name, but you can not.

The naming system should function as
Name - Battletag or gamertag
So you would be Bob-Zathor-2571
I would be Bob-MissCheetah-1661
Those are two different names to the system but both show as Bob. Pretty sure for your own account, you need to have diff names for your own chars.
It doesn’t work like that, it displays the character name.
I don’t think YOU can make several with the same name on the same Bnet account. Just that the game servers will allow several diff accounts to name a char “Bob”. The reason is the game, behind the scenes, appends the Btag to it. It does not show in chat though - but the computer still knows that Bob-Zathor is different than Bob-MissCheetah.

As mentioned in the interview. The point is, to prevent name scarcity . The number of popular, well sounding and pronounceable names is limited. And on a global server these would run out on day 1.
However with no word it is mentioned, that we are supposed to be able to use the same name for our Mage, Druid and Paladin at the same time…
