Online only DRM should be illegal and a finable offense

Talk about aggravating anti-consumer practices: Online Only DRM. I was stuck at the DMV for a couple of hours. I brought my Switch because I knew it would be a while, but I can’t play Diablo 2 because I haven’t played my Switch in over a month, so I’m stuck staring at some 2 and half hour download on my hotspot instead of playing my game.

Why? Well, you see, even in airplane mode, I can’t just play Diablo 2 on my Switch. NOOOO… I have to “Authenticate” using my hotspot. So, I used my phones hotspot to authenticate, but still I couldn’t play because of the stupid patch, which come to find out later was just for seasonal content that I don’t use at all, anyway.

IF I COULD JUST PLAY OFFLINE IN AIRPLANE MODE I WOULDN’T FEEL LIKE I WAS CHEATED OUT OF $60.

I bought the game on the Switch specifically for these kinds of situations and it was sabotaged by “live services” and online only DRM.

Waste.

Of.

Money.

Edit: Before someone says “you should log in before you leave your house”. No. That’s not the answer. I shouldn’t have to plan my day around Blizzard’s awful DRM practices. That’s not the answer.

so … let me just get this straight.

you took something you haven’t been playing on recently, and just thought it would magically work? i mean… in this new age of tech i think it’s ALWAYS best to check if things work how you think they should before you make an … baboon out of yourself.

yes, it’s the first post. you should check if things work before using them, you ape.

and yes, you should PLAN your day like that if it has things that you haven’t checked.

like you checked if the DMV was open before going right? you check that your car is full of gas, you check that you’ve eaten food and are properly hydrated. but you did not check if your entertainment was working properly, and now you look an entitled brat.

This is exactly the terrible response I was expecting. People like you are the reason why these companies get away with screwing over customers.

??? i do not advocate for blizzard, but your attitude is terrible, you’re literally like a 3-4 year old who didn’t get a cookie(because you didn’t check if the cookie jar had any cookies in it and it’s your job to fill it) . i do not feel bad for you.

Wow, you are hostile. What is wrong with you?

Blame software piracy. That’s why DRM exists in the first place.

If there wasn’t thievery in the world, there’d be no need for DRM, or locks on our doors, or passwords, etc.

i’m tired of absolute brainless idiots on the internet with their entitled opinions.

maybe if you want things to work, make sure they work. before wasting your own time. ffs.

Man, you are a terrible human being. I’m talking about bad anti-consumer practices and you’re attacking me like I kicked your dog or something.

Seriously, what is wrong with you?

i already told you what’s wrong with me, get over yourself.

there i’ve blocked you… we don’t need to keep doing this. have a good day.

You should seek help. I don’t know how you got so offended by my criticism of online only DRM, but this can’t be healthy for you.

And for the record: My Switch works just fine. Diablo 2 works fine. This isn’t broken. It was intended.

I don’t think that’s the right answer. Screwing over the overwhelming majority of people because some small percentage of the population is too cheap to pay for a game just annoys the majority of people. I don’t think it’s actually saving Blizzard any real money in the long run because there’s got to be some number of people who just refuse to buy games with this kind of DRM.

It really doesn’t matter what we, the consumer, think is the right answer. What matters is what the software developer/publisher thinks is the right answer, and is of course legal.

It is what it is… If you don’t like it, you have two options:

Buy DRM locked games. (and complain about it)
-or-
Don’t buy DRM locked games.

Oh, so he’s a forum lurker. One of those weirdos who thinks that because he uses the forums they somehow belong to him and he can decide who is or is not allowed to post things on his forums.

Makes sense now. At least he blocked me so I don’t have to keep being subjected to his mindless responses.

i would have tested and been prepared you knew it was a long wait should have had it ready the day before imo and you already knew it was a online check in game cus it tells you before you can even play it at all

Well, on the other hand, the majority of games out there don’t have online-only DRM. Why would I just assume that this one has it? I don’t spend all of my time playing Blizzard games and this garbage isn’t exactly an industry standard. If anything, it’s completely counter-intuitive.

What is the point to buying a game on the Switch if you can’t play the game without the internet? The whole point to the Switch is that it’s portable. To be able to play it in places where we don’t have a good internet connection.

Like I said, buying this on the Switch was a waste of money.

the op before edit said he got shut off due to inactivity right? the practice of suspending people´s availability to a purchased product is bullcrap for sure.

i took over a month off to give diablo snore an overly fair chance, i later returned to d2r with no repercussion. able to play.

there should always be offline mode with a game.

This day in age, I find it extremely hard to believe that your Switch is never within an earshot’s distance of a usable WIFI source during any given consecutive 30 period.

Unless you just leave it off until you decide to play it out in the middle of nowhere…

Consider us lucky that they let us play for a whole month before requiring a connection. Most DRM games won’t let you play period without a connection.

I have a PC, Xbox Series X, and PS5. I don’t touch my Switch unless I’m going to be stuck somewhere without access to one of my other systems. So yeah, it was sitting in the dock, in sleep mode, for the better part of 6 months without being touched.

Well, now you know to turn it on and let it update before going out in the middle of nowhere.

Don’t know what else to tell ya.
