One offline character save files corrupted

My level 75 druid had his save files corrupted, as well as the shared stash save file. I had no power outages. I have no idea how or why this happened. I exit the game normally. I still have the save files. If the tech team would like my corrupted save files to help figure out what is happening, let me know. I can share them via onedrive.

Have you tried “scan and repair” function in the app? Not sure if that helps but maybe.

You can use an old D2 character editor to remake your character then copy the character files into the D2R folder.

Examine it yourself with a hex editor. Chances are, the .d2s file is completely zeroed out, meaning there is no chance of recovering anything from it. On the slight chance it isn’t zeroed out, then it may be salvageable. But many others have been in the same boat, and all their files are too badly corrupted to be of any use.

Yeah it didn’t help.

The .d2s file is just 20 repeated all over. the other files look fine. like the .key file.

Unfortunately, as Bones would say, “He’s dead, Jim.” No way to recover that character if the file is that badly corrupted. This has happened to quite a few others. No idea why. Some people had their save game files corrupted after a crash, but others just exiting normally. The only thing to do is maintain regular backups of the save game files.

very strange. i thought a corrupted file was just partial damage and not total wipe. can’t imagine what does that.

Exactly which files need backing up?

Is the saved stash always wiped out when a character file is corrupted? If so doesn’t that make saved stash pointless? Or is replacing a corrupted file with an older backed up version preserve the saved stash?

Can the saved stash file itself become corrupted? This brings me full circle back to my question of what exactly needs to be backed up?

The .d2s (character save files) and .d2i (shared stash files) in C:\Users\username\Saved Games\Diablo II Resurrected are the main files, but it’s fine and easier to backup the entire folder.

The main cause of corruption in D2R (hard computer shutdown while D2R is open; whether that be from a forced shutdown, power outage, etc.) will cause your currently loaded character to corrupt along with the relevant (softcore/hardcore) shared stash.

Replacing the shared stash file with an older backup will restore it (besides stuff that you placed in there after backing it up of course.)

Yes, see above.
