This has been the worst experience I ever had playing D2R. Finally I give up.
Before 2.4 I never played online. My entire D2 play has always been offline since D2 release. I never wanted or had need of other players, trading, loot, or even cared about ladders, etc.
When 2.4 came and I saw an opportunity to try ladder for the first time. I just wanted to see how far I could get SSF with a whole new build, focusing in one character only, my Hydra Sorc.
But hell, to play D2R online is impossible. A LOT of disconnects. A LOT. In can’t get a game to last more than 20 minutes. When I wanted a long session to go through history so I could reach Hell I had to create a private game in the lobby and reenter that game dozens of times. Also the game is so slow that half the time I teleport I die because the game has not loaded everything. Yes, teleporting faster than the game loads is a PITA.
So I reached a point I don’t want to endure this anymore. I could play D3, Immortal, SC, SC2, whatever game even PoE without any lag or loading issue, but D2R is unplayable.
I see no excuses the server is so bad it can’t hold games or work properly. This is unacceptable in 2022 when we have a lot of resources and technology to minimize this network problems. Unless you are using the same hardware/network from 2000 there’s no excuse.
Blizzard you lost your your way long time ago. I do hope you get it back in the future.
This has helped me tremendously for ping spikes over the last 10 years:
Disabling the wifi scanning in Windows. You won’t be able to select the wifi while it’s disabled, and if you restart your PC you will need to re-enable it to connect. So that’s why if you do this you need to save the inputs on your desktop or somewhere where you have access to while offline.
But for some reason, I have to do this otherwise I get ping spikes in every game. I most likely need to upgrade my router or computer.
Also if you want to try this, someone made a bat file for download near the bottom. That’s what I use. Just run as admin each time you use it.
Being the only game to experience issues with isn’t really sufficient enough troubleshooting to rule out network/ISP problems though. We’d need to see your latency, jitter and packet loss statistics over a period of time.
For what it’s worth, I connect from australia and often have 250-300ms pings to NA when jumping into lobby games made by american players. Despite the lag, there are no disconnects every 20 minutes.
Network issues can never be ruled in or out by “no other games have issues”. That said, do you have any statistics you can paste here?
Have your service provider update your equiptment. If you are with a wired connection, the junction box could have outdated and even corroded componets installed. They should fix it for free.
Sounds like a problem with your internet connection.
I’ve disconnected in D2R exactly twice, and one of those two times was my internet going completely out. The other time I"m not sure what happened, but really, your technical difficulties are not the game’s fault.
There are ways to resolve most connection issues with the game.
Aside from those issues, remember that playing online doesn’t necessairly require playing with others. Many people play mostly alone, purely for the oppertunity to get the (temporarily) exclusive rune words, or to just challenge themselves in a way that playing casually in non-ladder doesn’t provide.
D2R has a memory leak issue and has since launch in what is known as page file collection, If you have stuff in the background mostly “Google Chrome or Discord” those use the same page file route as D2R does causing D2R to crash to desktop or Disconnect you from the server for less then 2 seconds, leading to a disconnect. The reason for this was back in the day it’s how people duped items. So now the server has no margin for error if you lose even 0.1% of your connection to the page file system Bnet kicks you out.
I’m sure it’s obvious but do not play behind a VPN or a Proxy this always leads to horrible disconnects. Some Anti Virus programs (Mostly Avast and AVG) will not let you play D2R with any level of normality as both has a really touchy firewall and mistakes just about everything as a threat. Just some helpful advice in case any of this applies to you.
