Noob question on upgrades

Hey guys, realm down so figure I’d use the down time to educate my noob self.
I’m trying to upgrade unique items with the cube, as I’ve seen others do on Youtube, but I can’t seem to make it work.
Can anyone explain what I’m doing wrong?
I’m playing online, non ladder
I’ve tried upgrading a few uniques like Ormus robes, areats face, string, lightsabre,etc.
I’ve tried both recipes that I’ve found which were:

Amn+Ort+P saphire / Fal+Um+p Saphire

and

Ral+Thul+P amethyst / Pul + ko + P amethest

It never works. What Am I doing wrong? Do I have to be in a certain act? Is this ladder only?
If so, how have guys been running around with upgraded items before the ladder start in d2r?

These things are already elite level items. You can only upgrade things that are normal or exceptional.

Double check to ensure it’s a valid recipe first. Never done this myself, so I can’t be sure. I just use yellow and green items I find, or slap runes into a crud item. Less hassle.

So I saw a dude running around with a 745 A-Face, and he told me it was lower than that and he upgraded it. You telling me he was full of it?

Arreat’s Face is a Slayer Guard and can be upgraded to a Guardian Crown I believe is what you saw

Ormu’s & Lightsaber etc is already Elite level

So how can I tell whats normal, exceptional and elite?
Is there a way to tell on items, or you just have to know every kind of possible class for every item?

I tend to look on fandom or wiki and you can see base types there. Other people use the oldschool pages

just google d2 and the unique and in the resulting pages look at the base type. click that and you can see the normal/exceptional/elite versions

Use the Arreat Summit. Best D2 site out there, made by Bliazzrd folks. All cube formulas found there. It will un-noob your.
