New Runeword - Obsession

Obsession

  • Indestructible
  • 24% Chance to cast level 10 Weaken when struck
  • +4 To All Skills
  • +65% Faster Cast Rate
  • +60% Faster Hit Recovery
  • Knockback
  • +10 To Vitality
  • +10 To Energy
  • Increase Maximum Life 15-25% (varies)
  • Regenerate Mana 15-30% (varies)
  • All Resistances +60-70 (varies)
  • 75% Extra Gold from Monsters
  • 30% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

At first glimpse this runeword seems very underwhelming considering the runes it uses. This thing is comparable to a double spirit setup. It has the same +skills, 5% less possible FCR, 50% less FHR, 34 less vitality, and huge loss of mana. However, it does boost maximum life quite a bit and give a huge amount of resists, and some gold and magic find.

Compared to Hoto + Spirit, this really doesn’t compare as the 1-hand/shield setup gives +1 skill, +10% fcr, and increased mana while really only boasting more maximum life and some magic find.

That being said, what makes this better than dual spirit and possibly better than HotO/Spirit is the fact that you can make this in a staff base with +3 to certain sorc skills. This would yield +7 to main sorc skills which outperforms HotO/Spirit which has +5.

It will be interesting to see if this will dethrone the normal meta of HotO/Spirit… but we’ll see if it can compete with eschutas/death’s fathom.

(Not to mention 24% chance to cast lvl 10 weaken which reduces enemy damage by 42%.

This may become a new standard to use and is possibly the runeword with the highest chance of upsetting the meta)

+2 to main skill is not worth zod.
You need +3 to main skill AND +3 to mastery saff to put zod in it.
And that base is so rare, that you have to pay 2 more zods for it.

HotO/Spirit are definitely probably better value, but I see Obsession as a new endgame setup for those lucky to get GG bases.

For a 6-socket war/rune/archon staff, can you get a base that is +3 to all sorc skills and +3 to another skill like frozen orb or hydra or lighting? I mean that is potentially+10 skills to frozen orb here.

You cannot get +3 to [Skill Tree] on a Normal Staff.

It is a magic prefix, not auto prefix

You guys are right. I forgot runewords can only be used in normal items.

In that case, a full Tal set with a 2-2-2 orb + 35 fcr spirit shield is still better, imo.

i vote for redemption on obsession

That would be a good choice as well.

I don’t think it was meant to replace bis weapon for the most common builds aka blizz/lightning/fireball sorc.

It could be very helpful to underused hybrid builds. Hydra / orb for example.

It can be great for pre casting spells like thunderstorm, blaze, enchant, energy shield and the cold armors.

I will definetly be using this runeword on a +3 enchant staff to make a 7 chant on swap, because the 5-6 chant orbs are a pain to find. I might even get lucky and find a +3 enchant +3 fire mastery +3 blaze base.

Then they shouldn’t have used Zod in it.

is zod harder to get than a good chuta or fathom?

I do wish they made this a 4 socket runeword to allow more possible bases to be used… it will be rarer to find good Archon staves with +3 skills.

You have memory for +9 energy shield
Cold armor is a nice secondary skill for memory staff
You have leaf for +6 enchant (can buy base from vendor)
You cannot precast TS and blaze, these are not allowed to cast in town

Not necessarily, but it is about 100 times more rare than Vex and Pul and this staff is barely better than Spirit Shield and HotO.

You can buy perfect eschuta for mal now.
Death fathom is expensive, yes.

If I get a Zod ill use it just because Im tired of the meta for a sorceress being carrying around a shield and flail. Its really stupid and Im glad to see a somewhat viable staff runeword for all sorc classes finally be included.

It’s pretty underwhelming, the life bonus and potential for +3 to a sorc skill on the staff are nice but it just feels like such a waste of a zod rune. I was expecting a godly weapon that could put indestructible to use. It’s just so close to a double spirit for so much more cost.

The weaken may be a gamechanger, it’s starting to grow in me a bit. Still not sure why a zod was used for it though.

Also any class can use this not just sorc.
