Howdy, so ive heard about Diablo for like over 20 years and always knew about the game but never actualy touched it. Back in the day i just didnt like the moveing and clicking and idk screen angle or something dont remember anymore why but for some reason i played runescape and wow and thousands of other games over the years. And now few days ago when i was updating my CoD in my bnet launcher i was just surfing around in the market caz of spring sale and saw D2R+D3 for 20 bucks or so and i was like heck ima try it.
I have no clue about the game so i first started as barbarian and was bretty confused and squishy and died 3 times in first 10 minutes i think. So i went googling to what class to choose as a beginner in D2r. As you can guess googles nr1 class for d2r is Hammerdin. After going through few of them previews and hypes and videos about hammerdin i found Oxygens guide for hammerdin from icy-veins.
Started off as holy fire and zeal man it was so OP no probs, mons dieing as i walk by etc. And then the leveling and startup part ended at lvl 18 and it sayd now respec to main build… I was like ye now we gonna mow eaven more and faster… Man was i wrong felt like a mouse in a lions den am like i drink mana with one hand and spam hammers with the other and mostlt ran out of mana and pots before mobs die and start hitting them with regular melee attacks…
So my question for tips and help is should i reroll again and start a new pally with holy fire up to 30s-40s or is there a way to continue to level up with the mana problem.
Im lvl 18 in second quest in act 2 took me about id say 5-6 hours to get there or more, havent tracked playtime, have around 10 points in str and all rest in vitality so im tanky enough to eaven barehand few mobs if needed with almost 400 hp at least for now.
Oh and i play online.
And like overall tips for beginners would be very welcome like gearwise what to keep what to trash and so on.
You should have your build sort of predetermined at least to the point of knowing which skills you want 1 point in just for the bonus versus those that you want to max. Barbs are one of the more forgiving classes when it comes to your spells, hard to really screw it up even if you are a total noob and put like 5 points in each weapon mastery…but the trade off is Barbs will never even come close to matching clear/kill speeds of the most popular builds.
Think it is tough for people to recommend what you should do. Watch some streamers and read up on some guides… d2jsp still retains the best collection of guides.
Honestly, I’d suggest simply starting by trying all classes out a little, to see what skills you enjoy, and using the act I respec to try other skills if the ones you took aren’t to your liking.
If you have issues, you can try describing your issue in the forums, so that we can help you.
Not sure what to tell you about having issues with the barbarian so early in the game. Don’t hesitate to use your potions often, as they drop a lot, and don’t forget that it’s not a game where you just rush in the middle of monsters to nuke everything. You are supposed to kite them in order to have only a small number on you.
Thanks for all the tips. I rerolled myself a new pally and will stick to holy fire till i have mana sustainable gear around late 20s or early to mid 30s.
Oh and how active is the market? I mean how much are people trading stuff and what is good to keep and sell/trade.
There is no good ingame trading system, so a lot of people trade outside the game on different platforms. Early ladder the market is booming, after a few weeks it slows down.
When you switch to hammerdin, try getting a plain white crystal sword from cows on normal (if you use act 5 q 1 socket reward, you get a 4 socket sword for the runewors spirit) do the same for a halberd for the runeword insight. That should solve your mana problems. You can get the runes you need from a1 countess in nightmare. You should also be able to get a 4 socket shield from nightmare cows for a spirit shield
This is great advice IMO. Barb usually is pretty smooth sailing through normal, although damage untwinked does start to slack off by Act 4/5, and Diablo (and even Infector of Souls seal boss) can be a big gear/stat check for them. Starting NM and Hell, if you don’t have gear found on other characters, or really good luck with drops, it can get a lot tougher.
You need 4 open socket (OS) bases, which don’t drop naturally in Normal difficulty (but items with sufficient item level (ilvl) to get 4 sockets from Cube recipe or Act 5 Quest 1 reward (Larzuk) can drop in certain areas of Act 4 and 5), but I’d look into Insight Pole Arm for an Act 2 merc or in a Bow for Act 1 merc, and Spirit in a 4 socket sword and also Spirit in a 4 socket paladin shield. Paladin specific shields are the only shields able to roll 4 sockets until you get to the “elite” base items that don’t drop until late Nightmare and Hell difficulty (Monarch is the typical go to b/c of the lowest strength requirement for 4 OS). Insight is lvl 27 and Spirit is lvl 24 iirc.
This depends on whether you are NL (non-ladder) or Ladder and if Ladder, how long the ladder season has been going, but generally you will see in game trades, trade posts on this forum in the trade section, and other places like Traderie are also common useful trading platforms.
To start getting wealth collecting things like runes used in crafting or repair recipes, and gems to upgrade to Perfect Gems (PGems/PG) is a good way. Amethyst are worth about 2x as much as a “normal” PGem and Ruby are worth about 1.5, due to their use in crafting. You can usually sell packs of 10/20/40 and often people will trade unique and set items, for PGems as well. Jewels are also useful to collect, you can sell packs of 40 “junk jewels” (not useful properties) for use in crafting (jewel properties don’t matter for crafting).
You could also look into dual-speccing your paladin with fire/cold or fire/lightning. That’s probably not as efficient as the build the guide is suggesting, but it’s likely to be able to do most content in the game by switching from one aura to the other depending on the immunities your opponents have. And if you like the fire aura, it’ll probably be way more fun than switching to a build you may not like.
