In the main menu and in game my screen has gone almost completely dark , the characters are still visible and I still can control them and use the user interface but the screen is almost completely dark , I don’t know what to do . The problem doesn’t go away by turning off and then turning on the game or the computer .
Please somebody help …
In main menu click options to goto Video settings.
Beside “Brightness” click the “Calibrate” button.
Now move the shown slider.
Dr Disaster -It doesn’t work … the background of the screen is just a little bit bright but the rest of the screen is black , including the character. Even when I put the slider on max brightness
Strange … how is it in Windows itself respectively when D2R runs in a window?
Perhaps you are overtaxing your display. Are you using your screens default resolution?
What is your frame rate setting? When it’s over 60 try reducing it.
Dr Disaster - there’s no change when D2R runs in a window .
I am using my screen default resolution .
I do not understand your last sentence . You want me to reduce my frame rate cap ? If this is so , it doesn’t help either .
Nope, not frame rate cap. The frame rate you run your display with.
Windows Settings → System → Display → (scroll to bottom) Enhanced Displaysettings
Modern displays have multiple options here. Pick the lowest for your resolution.
When changing the frame rate does nothing the problem might be display driver related.
Best course of action: update to latest display driver and reset driver settings to default.
Dr Disaster - when I go to enhanced display settings it brings me to the refresh rate of the screen . Should i lower the refresh rate ? If so , i tried and didn’t change anything
OK. Next: update your display driver to the latest version if it’s not already up-to-date.
On top of that reset your display driver settings to default. This requires to use a display driver settings tool.
I can only tell you how it’s done on nVidia GPU’s:
-
right-click your desktop and look for an entry called “nVidia Control Panel” in the shown menu.
-
in case there is no such option open “Microsoft Store”, type “nvidia control panel” in the search bar on top and install the app
-
once installed open the “nVidia Control Panel”
-
on the left side select “Manage 3D settings”
-
on the right side you will be shown a list of settings with a button below. Click that button.
-
on the left side select “Change Resolution”
-
on the right side make sure Color-Settings is “Standard” or “Default”
Now open the game again. When there is still no change check in Windows Settings → System → Display if the option “Windows HDR” is enabled. For me it adds some ugly and fuzzy haze to D2R. In case it’s enabled disable it.
Dr Disaster - I have done this part : « I can only tell you how it’s done on nVidia GPU’s:

Hasnt changed anything .
But how do i update my display driver ?
Dang that doesn’t sound that promising …
Anyway.
Updating your display driver requires that you know what GPU you got, both make and model.
In the search field type “device manager”. Double-Click the top result to open it.
In the left-hand tree expand the entry “Display Adapters”.
Now you can see the make and model of your GPU.
Easy way to upgrade the driver: right-click your GPU entry, select “Update driver” and choose to automatically search for a driver. This will prolly bring up windows update. Let you PC do the work until finished.
Now it is possible that this will not produce results. Due to this is in general better to got to the maker’s website and download the latest driver for your model. For example for an nVidia card goto the nvidia . com website, at the top-right clcik “Drivers”, pick your card series, model and OS in the “manual driver search” and hit “Search”.
You’ll get a top result and a few more. Click “View” on the top result and “Download” on the next screen. Once the download is done start it by double-click, let it do the recommended install / update and wait til finished.
Dr Disaster - ok i’ve updated my display driver ,updated my Windows too . It hasn’t changed anything to the issue .
I believe I’ve also reset my display driver settings to default If this is what it consisted of :” * right-click your desktop and look for an entry called “nVidia Control Panel” in the shown menu.

Like i said , no change .
weird …
Just to make sure again: this is only within D2R? Not in Windows or other games?
Dr Disaster - yes , only within D2R , no other games involved .
And about windows, what do you mean by “not in windows “? You are asking if there’s a black screen in my computers start screen ? If so , no .
I meant, are your OS menus or it’s APPs as dark as D2R?
Dr Disaster - what is an APP ?
Programs. The stuff you can get from Microsoft Store? And anything that comes with your OS.
Dr Disaster - no my OS and my programs are ok .
Also , another characteristic of this bug is that, in video settings in the game , the resolution and the resolution scale are locked , I can’t change them. Locked to 3840 * 2160 for the resolution and to 100 for the resolution scale .
Seems you run D2R in Fullscreen mode which uses the resolution you set in your OS.
Right there you can also switch the game to Window mode with free choice of resolution and scale.
You seem to know not much about your system or computers.
Who set it up?
What’s your graphics card?
What’s your display?
Is the 4k resolution set in your OS the recommended / nativ setting?
Dr Disaster - my PC has components from Cybertek in France and Materiel. Net, a French firm .
My graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 from MSI
My display is a Samsung Odyssey G8 S32DG800SU
The resolution I use is both recommended and native
Also , the windowed mode doesn’t help to unlock my resolution scale . I just switched to windowed mode and the resolution scale remained locked at 100. I think this may be the cause of the issue , I need to find a way to move my resolution scale
Edit : ok I managed to solve the issue by deleting all my saved files from UserProfileFolder , the screen is normal again and the resolution scale is unlocked but I had to delete all my progression . Hope it doesn’t happen again. I don’t know why it happened , maybe because the save was corrupt somehow or because I put my resolution scale to 100 … what is the resolution scale by the way ? What does this setting do ?
Good to hear things are back to normal.
However … what gave you the idea to delete everything from your UserProfileFolder?
Mixed within all character data, all offline map data and all offline shared stash data there is a file called settings.json. This file contains all settings of the game including gamma (brightness) values. Those values might have been corrupt. It should have been enough to delete just this one file, not all the character data too.
Resolution scale is a percentage value of the resolution the game uses to render it. This value gets unlocked by setting nVidia DLSS to off / diabled. Any other setting locks resolution scale at 100. Since you got an RTX 5080 i suggest to set nVidia DLSS to Quality.
