Yes they will ban you for sure
I have lived by something that a good friend of mine said decades ago: “When in doubt leave it out.” That is a safe way to live. It means that if you have doubts that using mods and cheating like trainer programs or botting (definite ban) then don’t do it.
Here’s a copy past of a post in blozz forms from brotherlaz medianXL dev. TCP/IP is not really why MP modding cant be done. Private servers is the real killer for MP mods. Like PD2 PoD and MXL
Hi! I’m the creator of Median XL, one of the “top three” mods for D2 (now maintained by community members). There has been some misinformation about mod support in D2R, but the bottom line is that it is probably not viable, partly (but not entirely) due to the removal of TCP/IP.
Diablo 2 has a single player mode, but let’s be honest, most people want to play with others. There are three ways to do so:
- TCP/IP, either locally or using Hamachi to set up a virtual LAN and play with others over the internet. This feature has been removed from the game a few days ago.
- Open battle.net, where you can take your single player character and create/join lobbies outside Blizzard’s servers. According to a Blizzard rep on a beta stream, there will be no open battle.net in the game.
- Private servers. This is what people point to as the saviour of modding. After all, Median XL uses a private server, as does PD2 and PoD. The problem with private servers is that they violate the Battle.net Terms of Service.
Nowdays, D2 mods can get away with openly promoting their private servers because the game is abandonware and Blizzard has nothing to gain by shutting them down, but this was not always the case. Back in the days, private servers were a closely guarded secret due to the potential legal consequences.
Keep in mind that private servers can be used to play pirated copies of the game online, and Blizzard already served the hackers who cracked the D2R alpha a cease and desist letter. They have every reason to go after people who develop or run a private server for D2R.
There seems to be this widespread idea that Median XL, PD2 and PoD will be immune to the removal of TCP/IP because they have a private server and only the less popular mods will suffer. However, not only are none of them compatible with D2R out of the box, but there will be no private servers.
That leaves single player, and frankly not many people would be interested in a single player mod.
It is all a bit unfortunate after Blizzard hyped up the new modding possibilities in a series of Twitter posts. It is true, you can do some cool things with the game… but there is no reason to do so beyond low effort single player cheats. Alas
Thx for sharing, just something while I’m at it, Diablo 2 is not abandonware, never was. Blizzard let PD2 and PoD run their course because theres no monetization in D2 but they cxlearly shat down WoW servers in the past.
Diablo is their intelectual property and, unless Blizzard goes under (along with Activision), Diablo 1 and 2 will never be abandonware.
Well, not necessarily true. It has indeed lessened the presence of modders but if you join the Phrozen Keep discord/forums, they are very very actively ripping and tearing D2R apart and modding it quite nicely.
There’s no actual mods out yet that are conversion mods, but there are quite a bit in the data department. I wholeheartedly expect conversion mods to be out in the next half a year.
Laz is a blowhard, let’s be honest. He’s just as bad as a lot of the doomsayers on the forums. There will eventually come an alternative, it will just take time.
Why be negative and tear into the product before anyone knows the potential or possibilities? Laz didn’t know and doesn’t know. Nobody knows. We’re in the first month of the game being out and they were denying the future of D2R MONTHS before the game even came out.
As stated above making multiplayer mods is very difficult, never say never but it does look like PoD and PD2 modders don’t have much interest in working on D2R.
For now, sure. I’m going to remain hopelessly optimistic because I know people have a very deep love for the Diablo 2 title and will for sure want to make the future for it a bright one.
I’m all for playing these great mods on the new engine, that said I am not holding my breath and nor should anyone at that point.
Wait and see.
My lord thanks for the enlightenment! Ill go spend the afternoon reading it then Ill simply forward any questions to my Lawyer…
A lengthily document of legal jargon that makes little to no sense to most people. . Nope
feel free, I’m pretty sure the lawyers going to laugh at you for not reading the contract you signed.
So the implication is that an individual should be expected to read every tos of all the video games they buy along with every other product or else risk becoming a laughing stock to their legal representation and possibly their peers? I’m sure you do this with each and every piece of software you use or you wouldn’t be making such claims, right?
Yup. Make sure you read your contracts before agreeing to them. Any lawyer can tell you that. Any person that’s done any business what so ever will tell you that. But I’m guessing since you didn’t know that you don’t even have lawyer to send your ToS to to begin with.
Everyone BOW! I’m in awe of you sir.
Correct, I’ve been lucky enough not to need a lawyer thus far but now that you’re brought this matter to my intention I may reconsider. I have decades of video game tos’ I’ve blindly agreed to with my only thought being how fast I can get into the game. I mean who knows what may have been in those things? The right to revoke my key at a whim? An eternity of spam email? The naming rights of my first borne to be used for promotional purposes?
Offline, if people want to cheat they’re only cheating themselves.
Online, I’d go a step further… I think they should also delete the account permanently, too. No chance for reversal, period.
