Microsoft lays off 1900 Activision/Blizzard employees

Are you ready for nothing but ladder resets? (maybe)

Hopefully they don’t fire Raymond the Janitor, since he’s the one that keeps the place running.

Of course there are gonna be layoffs…no fusion/takeover without layoffs.
Now we gotta wait for D2 4k HD on steam or something, something like that. Would be a very microsoft thing to do xD

As you’ve seen what they’ve done with D2R, I’m not sure this could be considered a bad thing lol. They were clearly incapable.

Bobby “Big Bucks” Kotick gets canned, walks away with hundreds of millions. 1900 employees get canned, a few of them might get severance pay.

Alongside the layoffs, Blizzard president Mike Ybarra has decided to leave the company.

Allen Adham, Blizzard’s chief design officer, is also leaving the company. “As one of Blizzard’s cofounders, Allen has had a broad impact on all of Blizzard’s games.

Great news.

That Mike guy is the one who said “fans won’t have to wait 5 years for Diablo 5”

He was willing to sell another cash grab and soulless game riding off the backs of Blizzard North.

Maybe Diablo 5 will stand a chance at being a decent game now.

I’m curious how many of those layoffs were to cut off useless company bloat? Diversity / quota hires or somesuch.

Word is they’re shutting down all customer support and moving it to india.

I love how you jump to diversity or quota hires which might be some, but probably most were just budget hires the absolute bare minimum to keep pushing out trash products. Remember no matter how good or bad D4 is, nothing is going to make more money than rushing out D5 faster. Same with all the other companies.

Now that Microsoft is coming in, and they own the IP rights, they’ll look to clean up the work, and the current drones aren’t suitable for that task.

This is likely the case, still, there is probably some sort of calculated ratio of: Maximum virtue signaling to damage taken from achieving it, going on.

i hope they go the same way they did with aoe 2

While I think you’re perhaps a bit too far caught up in USA gender politic issues for whatever reason and I’m sure in some way shape or form it might apply because of their issues with sexual harassment lawsuits against them, it doesn’t change the base Acti-Blizz strategy for the past like decade. They don’t care if their current products are inferior and made by developers who have no clue what they’re doing. They just want a continuous cycle of releases for profit coasting off the name of the old company. I doubt that gender politics had any meaningful portion towards the decline of Blizzard, and it was largely the board and CEO and investors being greedy, and hiring budget devs and coders fed into that strategy.

Amen they’re still taking care of that game. Still updating it after remastering it like twice lol. And despite having an extremely small scene, they support it financially as well.

I bet AI could design a better game than the Diablo 4 developers.

Only time will tell if it’s for good or Blizzard will disappear. No great games came out anyway since they killed RTS which was their best side. WoW is cash grab with level boosts. Gaming overall is going to $hit. It’s more like shopping simulators than games.

Times changed. It’s all about that kids money from skins and gambling. WoW single mount earning more money than Starcraft 2 explains why we won’t get good games anymore.

Still it would be sad if Blizzard were to close. I’m definitely not moving to crap Riot games like League of Legends.

I hope not, Raymond really tried with some new stuff at 22 nights of terror.

The Diablo community is full of people who don’t know math

The cuts work out to roughly 8 percent of the overall Microsoft Gaming division that stands at around 22,000 employees in total.

1900 employees is not abnormal for a giant like blue. But oh noes big scary number!

These people play the game like it’s a slot machine. It’s captivating for them because they don’t know probabilities theory. “I did 5000 Pindle runs on Softcore and look what I got! Amazing :astonished:

While you’re somewhat right you’re convoluting the numbers a bit.
You’re taking Microsoft’s employee count of around 22k but comparing it to the 2k of blizzard staff. Which is about 20% of blizzards staff.

Regardless who cares? The people who were canned were hired to facilitate corporate greed, not because they were the best or smarted or most innovative game makers of all time. They were there to serve the greed of the top trying to inflate their buyout costs. Honestly I expect another round before too long, but for them to be replaced as well.

There are a lot of benchwarmers at these big tech companies.

Not saying there aren’t really hard working people in these companies, but there seems to be a lot of people that are actually a net loss to the company.

1900 employees gone is perhaps just trimming some of the fat.

Yeah did you expect her to actually show like work emails or whatever it is that her actual job was? I’m not saying that perhaps she wasn’t support crew or the least valuable, but do you think you would have seen much more out of a blog made by the CEO? or a mid level manager? I would guess this video would be about the same if any/every person at the company made it.
