Mercenary additional item slots

So i am lately playing with mod increasing space and there is also modificatio for mercenaries giving them ring, amulet, belt, boots and gloves position you can use.

And damn this is so amazing and does feel like it should have been in game long time ago already as it let me use alot more stuff from what i drop.

I just love it, it makes mercs a lot more viable for solo play and opens up new interesting choices as then can newly complete more sets.

It just makes perfect sense because i for example dropped laying of hands from baal on NM and it was useless to my sorc, but i could give it to merc now. I can give him items i would never use for my char because merc benefit from certain stuff but cant use mods like +mana. I can give him eth gloves belt or boots and focus on stats for him. I can craft equip for him… Its just opens up so many new options.

This should be added 100% together with more weapon type options to mercs like maces for act 5 maces and axes or for act 1 merc crossbows.

There is only issue with power of merc. I like this for solo play but i dont want to be it too op for multiplayer so maybe add some stat nerfs to mercs based on how many players is in game.

I think it would make for an interesting ladder theme once they run out of runewords to drip in. If well received, they could add it into the core game, or use it as a rotating theme for ladders, with a command line option for single player.

Are you by any chance speak of the full merc equip mod’s 4 D2R August 2022 update on reddit? that actually made the mod not crash in D2R patch 2.4?

If so, then I’m glad at least someone appreciates my work

I am not sure, its from nexus, from guy named “locbones”.

Expanded Storage (with Merc Equip)

Nah… It looks like someone made the same thing as me…
my work is on reddit… originally this mod was made even b4 beta, but ceased to work in Patch 2.4 and beyond, due to blizz updating some of the files with new code. simply put. the old version crashed to desktop when trying to open merc panel. I modified the mod from reddit, and not only made the mod work back agin but also made some polishing on it:

  • brought back legacy full equip inventory icon from Baron Josh.
  • aligned properly active item slots with the background in legacy mode.
  • fixed ring slot in legacy mode to display ring icon, not amulet icon.
  • changed the merc name location to be upper right in merc window as originally it was clipping with glove sprite.
  • made skill icons in D2R merc window sit next to each other so that devs could sneak in another 3 skills ( as that’s what in theory hireling.txt is capable of).

Also made a minimod that always gives act 5 mercs top eqipment look ( instead of beeing random), and also significant changes to act3 mercs that now wipe the flor with mob corpses ( not even remotly close to balanced XD) – however i striped this minimod from the reddit upload, so the merc equip mod stays more in line with the original…

Just to not confuse… orignally the mod was not made by me, i only adapted it to 2.4 and made some small fixes.

Änayway, its different mod but keep doing good job

I think it would be nice change. Also, would be nice if mercs specially the act 3 one, had more skills to use.

The change would be fine. Also wouldn’t mind a frenzy axe barb for A5.

i’d be happy with a single ring slot to give them Ravenfrost…Cham a bit expensive for multi mercs

in addition to ring slot…i’d add a new cube recipe to upgrade a Ravenfrost ring into a new ring only equipable by a Merc

Ravenfrost + Cham + Blue Essence + Thul rune + Ohm rune + P-Sapphire + 25-30% Cold Resist Jewel + +3 Cold Skill amulet…Ravenfrost upgrade to Raven Nebula
Raven Nebula: gain immunity to Holy Freeze, Cold Absorb increased to 30%, Attack Rating increased to 500, 20% chance to release a lvl 40 ice blast upon being struck

Don’t know what I’d prefer more

Full gear slot single merc

Or

Getting multiple merc by completing quests

It’s ironic when reading this since I suggested this very thing back in March(link → DarkHelmet’s Mercenary idea and you replied with the following:

No, this is too much. I would be ok with this for offline play but not for online.

Keep in mind that when I suggested it that 2.4 had not yet released and wouldn’t for another month. I should probably go through and massively update this at some point when 2.5 and the next Ladder comes rolling in. Anyways, it seems your position has shifted modestly to allow it for Online but only for solo play. I for one wouldn’t mind having more capable Mercenaries since there is always Classic Diablo for those aching for a REAL challenge since Mercenaries are an afterthought due to how weak they are. Furthermore, you can simply not have a Mercenary if you find them to be too OP. Nerfing their stats/damage based on number of players is not the way to go since what’s the point in having them if you do that? To act as fodder like on Classic Diablo? Waste of Gold if you ask me as I’d be better off Gambling than hiring Mercenaries.

Adding Glove, Belt and Boot slots to Mercenaries would instantly make any item that rolls Ethereal not entirely useless. I also advocated for Jewelry(Rings + Amulet) but I can compromise on limiting it just to gear with durability(Bows/Crossbows not withstanding).

Well people change opinions

I am actualy working on new topic with changes to mercs so you will be able to read my suggestions there

IF they ever implemented this, they would have to nerf Mercs by like…idk, 50% or something. Otherwise it’s just blatant powercreep when Mercs can be and often are just as strong as player characters, if not stronger, already. And that’s just with 3-4 item slots.

Well i am playing with fully equipped act 2 merc in playthrough and he went from fragile to usefull. Not like he is on my level of power even with full equip.

But yeah i would nerf their stats for games with more players.

Just make the Mercs disappear in multiplayer games like in D3, where you can fully equip mercs all the time and some of their skills spill over to the single player.
