What is the maximum online character slots with the new patch, since they added the 4 additional ones?
I googled it before I posted and found some older posts that it is 20, so does that mean it’s 24 now since Season 4 started?

24 can confirm.
Basically enough to make 1 character and 3 mules. About it. Something to mess around for like 2 weeks on, about it.

AFAIK singleplayer is unlimited. I’m not a SP player though, so someone like Zax, Kabryxis, or someone else could better answer you.
Worst case they ARE locally stored (which is why I believe they are unlimited to begin with) so you could always manually move them. I believe you can even use LoD character files. I think the format is the same still, which is why character files are still limited to 8KB (which does cause some bugs if you try to fill your storage with tons of 1x1 crafted items.)
Again not my field of expertise, but I “think” that’s right.
not sure why you came to conclusion for 3 mules
i used it to make generic blizz,hammer + bonus pnb necro for this ladder…and 1 ladder mule(which is already hard stuff of amethyst//junk jewels and skulls atm
yet to find an eligible rare to roll on ladder
Gotcha. Yeah, it would make sense that offline mode would be unlimited since all the character and data files for those characters are stored offline. Online, limitations would make sense since the server storage space would be limited (although, I can’t imagine that the character files are that big…haven’t looked into it, however).

Because 1+3=4. I mean there are other combinations. Like 1 Ladder, 1 HC ladder, 1 mule each. Or 1 Classic, 1 HC Classic, 1 Ladder, 1 HC Ladder (which is probably where blizzard got the “4” from to begin with.
Not everyone makes Blizz Sorc → Hammerdin every time for 15 years 
Some people make less meta builds, and for HC it’s nice to have multiple mules in case you die and then pick whichever class you got the best gear for the next run on.
I myself have a HC barb, 2 mules, and a ladder sorc that I “might” use to make 2 hustles, and a couple of the new helm runewords on just in case they don’t come out with new RW’s again. I mostly play SC NL.
