I love this game and cannot wait for terror zones. That said, since the advent of SP modding I’ve been thinking about the kind of experience this game has to offer and the kind of game I wish it could be at least as a mod or something.
The general idea is to make the game harder and slower for all and make it a more deliberate, thoughtful experience.
Think Dark Souls mixed with D1 with elements from POE:
Skills:
-Teleport now costs 10% of maximum mana.
-Enigma offers +1 Warp and has 3 charges recharging every 15 Sec.
-Blessed Hammer pierces only 3 targets now.
-Novas/corpse explosion damage scales based on proximity 100-0%.
-Javelins piece, but lightning bolts released do not.
-All non physical damage reduced by 10%
-FCR is now subject to slow effects just as IAS is.
-In general AOE abilities are brought in line at the top end with Physical damage abilities.
-Town Portal has a 1 min cooldown and is not usable in indoor areas.
Stamina:
-Running is now ‘sprinting’ and is 50% faster and drains stamina at a rate of 10% per sec.
-All attacks and abilities now consume stamina at a proportionate level to the power of the ability.
-Stamina recovers 100% faster from current recovery speed even while walking, no need to stop fully to initiate recovery state.
-Similar to Dark Souls stamina management, but less deliberate due to the sheer number of monsters.
-Slow down the general gameplay to foster atmospheric gameplay over speed-running.
Light Radius:
-Now a meaningful mechanic, monsters from darkness attack with 2x damage modifier.
-Default light radius decreased 50%.
-Environmental light sources also mitigate damage modifier adding to thoughtful gameplay and day/night cycle significance.
-makes caves and catacombs a scary place.
Items:
-Overpowered rune words brought back in line with Elite Uniques (IE Grief/nigma, etc.)
-Corruption system added similar to PD2.
Monsters:
-All monsters 20% stronger.
-Density increased in off path areas by 50%
-Ultra Unique map bosses occur occasionally.
-Monsters respawn off screen after 5 minutes with new randomness.
Endgame:
-Endless dungeon systems akin to POE.
-Arenas: dedicated arena mode.
-Battlegrounds: 4v4 battle in map akin to Bloody Foothills outside of Harrogath. Capture a relic and return it to team start area. Teams start at opposide sides and fight to the choke point. Players carrying relic move at reduced speed and cannot teleport/charge/leap. Rewards gold and leaderboards.
There’s a lot more that could be done. Not looking for flamers and cryers tearing up about their precious nigmas, this is not gonna happen officially so it would have to be a mod for those who want a deliberate, slower, harder experience.
