I have a level 86 Necromancer with 385% Magic Find, wandering through Act 1, the Secret Cow Level and Chaos Sanctuary, Hell difficulty, killing tons of monster to have ONE unique drop. I’m not exaggerating, I have an entire live stream as proof. Only Rakanishu dropped The Salamander…
So, what’s going on? I must be doing something wrong, right? I mean, isn’t 385% enough magic find to find unique items more frequently. Hell, even set items dropped 3 times. What I am doing wrong? What’s missing? My Necro is a Patriarch, level 86… sure, some quests are incomplete but is that a problem?
Shakos (the base item) seems to drop all of the time, something unusual on Diablo 2 “Classic”… people, after a while I start to count… white, gray and yellow Shakos dropped 11 times since I started to count!
first off a sorc is your go to for MFing. they get a bonus to it. also if i remember correctly anything over 300% your only hurting your self. sence you start to have deminshing returns over that. 300% is all you need this has been tested and proven over 21 yrs. having more than 300 does not do anything past that
You know, it got to the point where I’m irritated by this weird string of bad luck… I’m no lying when I say I’m doing tons to magic find with my Sorc, tons of meph and andy runs, and find little to nothing… I mean, bad luck aside, probabilities sometimes prevail, right?
I have no idea what’s going on… even a crappy unique… anything!
Ikr , my non MF necro is finding all the good runes for runewords for my MF character -.- its to the point i might just ignore the MF build and go for max dmg instead and just farm more
D2 magic finding / item finding is ALL about kills per hour. The faster you kill stuff, the more items drop. The more items drop, the more chances you’ll get GG gear. Please keep in mind that there are severe diminishing returns on Uniques for magic finding in D2 – if you google D2 magic find chart you’ll see what you’re % chance is for each 100% of magic find gear you have on. Generally, depending on the character, 250-500 magic find is enough. Never sacrifice kill speed for more magic find %. You can gear up some really fast killing builds with 200-250% magic find which is plenty for finding items.
This game is NOT D3. You can not gear up in a day. It can take weeks/months even to gear up a character to finish a build. Welcome to old school arpg. You’ll have to embrace the long streaks of either crap items dropping or no items dropping. Remember, its kills per hour that will net you your gear. Kill as fast as you can, and eventually you’ll get stuff to drop. Also remember that if you are soloing a game, mobs drop less items. The more people in the game, the greater number of items can drop from mobs. If you’re playing single player, play with the highest /player# you can kill stuff quickly.
your doing nothing wrong, except expecting to find them
unique items are very rare to find, being in hell does not make the “drop more”
and yes the more mf u have the better chance u have at finding them but 300x does not remotely mean 300% more it has severe diminishing returns.
if u want uniques your best best it to kill champions and act bosses
farm pindle, eldrich, mephy, andy, and yeah choas and cows are good too,
but you shouldn’t “expect” to find anything
in d3 loot literally rains from the freaking sky, d2 is different.
clear speed is more important than mf.
if u farm all those + countess, summoner and nith in the same you can "expect"maybe 1 unique on average every 2-5 runs… and only maybe 3% of those times it me have any real trade value.
With that kind of MF on an undergeared Necro you’re probably killing things at a snail’s pace. Which is why you aren’t finding anything. Farming efficiency will always trump any kind of MF stacking. Kill stuff faster, then tweak your MF.
Uniques never rain like candy here. They are very rare regardless of your magic find. More magic find always helps, but yes it trails off at a point in the 200s. It still always helps. Look up drop rates. It takes a LOT of grinding for a chance to see a unique though it’s never going to be common
Watch llama magic find video. All the information is out there this game has been analyzed for twenty years.
I ran a bot in single player, and you don’t want to know how rare some items are, but it’s just rng.
I read the guide, that you need a second character, which is new to hell and all quests are undone. Host a game and left and join with your main (first) character.
The first drop is always the best than second one.
I would take this as encouragement! The game is trying real hard to give you a harlequins crest!
My advice is drop your MF down to 200-300% in return for some killing power. The faster you clear and kill mobs, the more times you roll them dice for something nommies :3
First it sounds like you hit a patch of bad luck it happens. If this was over the course of 100 mephisto runs I would be surprised but it’s a possibility that can happen.
MF hits diminishing returns extremely fast and it’s only part of the item equation. Speeding up your kills and maintaining a reasonable MF level while you do it will give you the best odds at finding one. Finding that many shako bases means you’ve been relatively lucky with the first part of the drop equation just hasn’t turned out to be the drop you’re wanting.
Please read up on magic find diminishing returns and the MF / drop calculations.
Best advice is to hit a good FCR breakpoint and find a setup that’s a good balance between kill speed and MF. For example my sorc I’d much rather be at the 105 FCR breakpoint than be at the 63% with 100 additional MF. The speed and number of kills matter way more than your MF value especially as you go higher. Bosses and elite / champion packs will always be worth more to kill than just the random mobs. Don’t sit and kill every tiny little thing. Stick to areas your character excels at doing.
i think thats part of the problem nowadays, is people are hell bent on finding the best stuff ASAP, fast as possible…just enjoy playing the game, and guess what? you’ll find drops along the way
