Lost my offline characters… why did that happen?

I exclusively play offline as I’m the only person I know who plays and I like the players X command. But over the course of the past couple years I’ll come back and play when I have nothing else to play and over that time I’ve lost multiple offline characters. I don’t engage in any cheats or anything I just play normal.

I remember in the original D2 lord of destruction if you didn’t log in X amount of days from last play your character would be deleted but I swear they got rid of that for resurrected. Or did they not remove that?

I had a lvl 80-90ish necro and sorc but now all I have is a lvl 1 sorc.

Can someone please explain what happened?

The offline save location for your characters is:
C:\Users\useraccountname\Saved Games\Diablo II Resurrected\

If this location doesn’t exist or the files within are missing due to being moved or deleted, then that will result in the loss of your offline characters.

If you have backups of your character files, you can restore them to this location within your user profile.

I play on Xbox series x

Oh. That sucks. Nevermind then.

The best we can offer is hypotheses, as we can’t know how your computer is being used. Examples of reasons :

  • You deleted the characters yourself and forgot afterwards.
  • You inadvertently removed relevant files in the save game folder.
  • Somebody else used your computer and deleted the characters.
  • Your save files are still there, but in another profile’s folders, so you need to move them in your current profile’s save folder.
  • You changed your PC at some point, and didn’t copy the save files to it.

What you can do is make a computer-wide search of all .key or .d2s files (“*.key” in the search box). If you find your characters’ files, you can move all the contents of the folder they’re in to where your level 1 sorc’s save files are. The characters will be accessible the next time you launch the game.
If you don’t find them, then I’m afraid you’re out of luck and it will be a good idea to backup your save files to some clearly labelled and easy to find folder regularly, in order to make sure to find your characters again if the same thing happens again.

I didn’t do any of that I’m on console. I created the characters, played them and then one day stopped playing. I may have uninstalled the game to make room for games I was playing but I still have my online character which I haven’t played since even before my offline characters that were wiped away and I still have an offline lvl 1 sorc I used for a mule the same time as my other characters so uninstalling the game shouldn’t have any affect on that.

You might have attempted to have the Xbox make space, which it does by clearing old save files and things like screenshots and captures. That’s the most likely reason your single player character would be gone.

Not sure if a copy would be in the Xbox cloud, but that would depend on if you had Gamepass when you last played your single player character, and whether you want to get Gamepass now to test it out.

It’s a 50/50 regarding the single player save. I don’t know of any way to recover it if you used the space saver feature. Wish I had better news, but it is what it is.
