Load screen death

Went to Frigid waypoint with my level 98.

Result: Died almost immediately after screen loaded.

Expected result: not dying because of load screens.

This is game breaking; I should die because I make mistakes, not because of my PC specs.

If you need ideas:

  • load the level before loading the player (currently player loads first - I know because I can move my character while on a black screen… like, what is that)
  • have a ‘decoy’ spawn first instead of the player’s character and then swap when everything is fully loaded
  • have monsters not target players until after they move from the waypoint/town portal
  • have players be invincible until after they move from a waypoint/town portal
  • have monsters run away from waypoints/town portal (fear mechanics when they cross a threshold)
  • have monsters not spawn right on top of waypoints (this won’t solve the problem of TP’s or if someone drags monsters to a wp, but it’s a start)
  • have in-game options to un-pack those zip files where the assets are stored (some people are doing this manually, but updates break it. it’d be nice if it was built in)
  • have in-game options to pre-load assets upon entering a game
  • have in-game options to lower graphics quality so unzipping assets takes less time (presumably it would be smaller files)
  • look at how D2 LoD (legacy) loads levels and do that
  • have devs/QA test on old hardware. make them do a hardcore run and see how many rage-quit because duriel got them while they were loading (this would highlight the problem, not fix it)
  • something. anything.

I just lost my HC Ladder SSF Zealer to an champion pack on the Frigid Highlands waypoint. I loaded in dead, this is a huge problem. Anything to help with this would be a welcomed changed but this isn’t the first time this has almost happened. EVEN POE has you be safe until you move wtf Blizz.

theres a client side mod that removes the black screen, its ultimately just a black overlay until the game has finished rendering correctly. you can make the overlay transparent/not exist and you’ll see the weird loading process when you go through waypoints and stuff, but you’ll at least be able to see whats going on. since its part of the graphical engine, it would probably work online, and they arent going to ban for clientside mods enabled online
