Let us Lock character level

now while this is obviously extremely useful as a pvp aspect for :
lvl 9 VLLD ( very low level duels)
lvl 30 LLD ( low level duels)
and lvl 45 MLD ( mid level duels)

as it allows you to actually bring your twinked out character into hell just to see… “i wonder what i can kill”

that’s not the only reason why i want it.

its because to me what made Diablo 2 great, and why Diablo 3 and PoE are IMO complete failures… was is their infinite scaling.

because in Diablo 2, (with the sole exception of uber mephy’s conviction aura)
once you can beat hell, that’s that’s it… there is nothing harder

so then d2 turns into " what is the stupidest idea i can come up with to limit myself"

this what made d2 last for 20 years.

if i wanted to kill d clone with a firewall enchant sorc… i could do that.
if i wanted to make a shockwave druid. i could do that

finding a way to make some absurdly terrible idea be able to clear hell.
that’s what made d2 a absolute gem.

and this is what d3 loses with their bs " infinite" scaling. they LOSE the “play your way”
when u have " you need to use X set because it makes X skill do 20000% extra damage"

or you cant get good drops unless you play at a difficulty like greater rift 150 or w/e the bloody hell they are up to now.

that’s THEM dictating how YOU should play then choosing " you need to use one of these 4 sets and play one of these 4 ways to do anything" and then u just need to farm for better version of the exact same items" no build variety… no thought

being able to “lock my character level” so i can’t gain exp… i can’t gain extra stat points fro being a higher level… and just impose another restriction on myself to come up with even stupider ideas and figuring out just what i can get to work and clear hell with.

that’s what made d2 last 20 years.

because there was always something new to try… some new idea that was soo absurd… but it just might work…

this is why i want to be able to lock my character level

how far into hell can i get with a lvl 9? a lvl 30?
what build could i use to kill dclone with a lvl 30?

i could never do these in the original game because by attempting to do them i would gain levels

and yeah i didn’t need to allocate stat point or skill point. after i gained a lvl but my own character lvl still changed the block formula, it still changes the attack rating formula. and it still gives u base hp and and mana per lvl

because the ability to experiment and do completely stupid things is what made d2 last… its why the “promise” of “play your way” that diablo 3 had was completely broken with “sets” which preventing you from doing anything other than playing what they choose.

because after you played the game for 2+ years… clearing hell is a joke… after they u go into pvp and u go into… “what can i do in pvm”

also there is literally no downside… it would be extremely easy to implement.

and it doesn’t change the game in any way for player who dont use it.

Yes. Lld is Very fun

I worry they might kill LLD with character limit.

Mld was lvl 49 by the way

Sure, I don’t see any problem with this one at all

no… lvl 49 allows access to “mal” rune which would allow “oath”
mid was 45 to prevent access to “um” and “mal” but allow access to skillers

i mean sure most of the time people would allow it if u wern’t using “oath”

and yeah no one will bat an eye if u use an UM or mal in “most” circumstances, its mainly to prevent “oath” that it was set to lvl 45
most of the time even low 60-70’s were allowed as long as they weren’t using specific high lvl gears or rw’s

but if u come in my game with an “oath” thats a high lvl RW, that’s not allowed for MLD

Ah house rules. P cool

Ill make a diff character for any playstyle or level

I don’t see why not. Most fun I had was a melee poison dagger necy. No CE, No Nova, No minions, Rogue merc. Hell was fun…until he died.

Ooh I love this idea. Used to enjoy lld.

It’s bliss to see rational, creative suggestions for a change. Even though I don’t need them, or care for them, at least they don’t make me jump off my seat in disgust.

Sure, if you want to lock your character at x to farm x runes, go nuts.

im going to necro this thread because i feel it should be talked about

i do agree, it could be neat for pvp :stuck_out_tongue:

and also simply for some self-imposed challenge : finishing normal mode at lv 15 for example (without help)

i mean, i would have no issue with this but if your concerned about leveling up just go out and die a couple times to reset your xp bar.

With shared stash, this seems an easier way to continually farm for the same things, and then load them up on someone else to make them more powerful.

Conceptually, it should be OK… enforcement, a bit more problematic.

You… can lock character level… by not killing monsters…
Shocking, I know.

So, that addresses half of your use cases right there. (All of the dueling related ones)

The other half, killing monsters, comes with exp rewards… so, by definition, you’re going to gain more if you kill monsters. And uh… it’s not exactly hard or time consuming to level to 9 (or really anything under 75, if you’re online and know what you’re doing)… so if you get a few levels and want to try again… delete the character and reroll it?

All use cases have been addressed by existing game mechanics and design.

You did bring up some valid points about some of what made D2 awesome, and I’d be genuinely curious to see you kill DClone with firewall… honestly not sure it’s possible unless you have a lot of stuff buffing you.

what if you want to activate your a2 merc’s aura?

Combat with players?

I agree with this, although for

Couldn’t you just stop allocating stat and skill points after your target level? Or would it still be easier at higher levels? I can’t remember if your character level factors into hit chances in d2 or not.

it does. one half of the formula is attack rating vs defense, the other player level vs enemy level

MM. Well still though that only affects physical attackers.

I can’t really imagine it would be fun playing a barbarian in hell with a 5% hit chance. But if that is what OP wants
