Larger game sizes

Ok so if you have been reading anything I wrote on these forums you would know I am primarily for keeping the game as close to the original as possible.

However I had this idea when talking with my nephew and I was like well why not?

So the idea is simple why not add the ability to have larger games.

So instead of just 8 players it could be 16 or even 32 players in one game.

Difficulty would have to be scaled with the number of players but I think that the reason this never happened back in the day was pretty strictly a computer limitation.

I think it’s safe to say the computers are far more capable the servers are far more capable and the internet bandwidth is far more capable.

So why not?

I want to hear what everyone thinks about this and what potential issues there could be.

While I’m for this, I don’t think it will work.
I was thinking the same thing but for PVP games, maybe placing a PVP check mark while creating the game. That puts some PVP rules in the game, one of them being more players.

16 maybe 32 no way lol
could you imagine 32 summon necros lol holy crap the lag would be biblical …

Haha well I am working under the assumption that with better computers, better server hardware and better bandwidth capabilities the game could handle it.

Of course we have no idea what kind of under the hood improvements they Are making to the game.

I would assume a 64 bit client to help alleviate the memory bottleneck of being a 32 bit game.

This would be game breaking. Its way to easy as it is to kill all the pvm enemies in the game with 8. At least on the pvm end of the game.

I do see this as relevant if they made a pvp match type and had a custom pvp map, maybe an octagon town in the middle of a big open square. or a few different ones, themes of each act could be pretty cool.

Obviously changing the game isnt something the community wants. but there should be room to compromise on a few QOL things. Pvp maps that prevent town camping could be a big improvement, after seeing d2 in all its stages honestly we lost a lot of players to the toxicity of town campers and hackers the most. Preventing people from playing makes the game not fun and people quit when its not fun anymore.

I also think they should use some of the unused assets in the game code. Make a use for SOH, reroll torches with a few of them or something. Give us a reason to spend another 20 years farming.

Another big one is prepatch gear and hybrids. adding copies of a few of the items into the drop table and cranking up the rarity on NL only could bring a lot of the older players back. Or even have a replay of older patches for X seasons, repeat once every so many years to ensure rarities are maintained.

Just a few thoughts. sorry i went so off topic.

Haha no prob I actually like the idea of pvp maps.

But as for pvm being to easy that would kinda be the rub.

Monster hp increases for every player in the game. So 32 players would have much harder monsters then 8

I think it would be an interesting novelty concept. Don’t know how well it would balance though in terms of loot, experience, and density scaling (you have to have more monsters to slay) though. Also, the amount of text in the chat box or whatever chat interface we get. Would be chaotically epic though to see so many particle effects and such flying off.

So I was looking and it seems diablo II already has a formula in place for over 8 people.

So monster damage, monster hp, and monster attack rating continue to increase for every person over 8 as well with no changes to the game.

1.10+ (any): Hit Points = X * (n + 1) / 2

where X = base Hit Points n = # of players in game

Each additional player in the game also increases the damage dealt by 6.25%.

1.10+ (any): Experience = X * (n + 1) / 2

Yeah, I seen that too at one point. But does it scale up experience and loot no drop? I’d like loot no drop probably has a natural cap anyways, but experience would be pretty game breaking.

Which is why I think the experience part would need to be brought down.

But who knows just how strong the monster’s would become.

It would be interesting, like a large scale raid. However, imagine 16-32 people in maggot lair without teleport, muahahaha!

Oh dear lord you don’t even need the rest multiplayer maggot layer is such a pain

32 Summon Necs vs Maggot Lair!

Ok so I am trying to do some of the math here with the 8 player settings.

It looks like a 32 player game monster’s would have 200% damage and attack rating.

In hell diablo has 113,812 hp so according to the math.

Hell diablo in a 32 player game would have.

1,877,898 hit points

To put that into perspective an 8 player game diablo In hell has 43.75% increased damage. So 32 player diablo is doing more then triple the damage of the 8 player hell version and he would only have 625,966 hit points. So roughly triple the hit points as well.

“Not even death, can save you from me!” One lightning attack, there goes the neighborhood!

Not a bad idea. I was thinking they could do that if they added more content. Like another Uber/Ubers. Make it like WoW for 30-40 man raids/world bosses. Have a D2:R game specifically for that.

You guys should try classic hc, I play because it’s a challenge as it is, RIP your first lvl 88 char and let me know how you feel about this subject.

Your opinion doesn’t count if you use gear purchased from a botter or you use hacks.
