Item upgrade questions

So, I’m trying to wrap my head around item upgrades, and even after watching multiple videos and read many pages on it, I’m really confused.

I have a grey dimensional blade with one socket, and I want to upgrade it to a phase blade. Please, for the love of god, just tell me the exact steps I need to do, and what items to place in the cube with it, for each step.

You need to hack the game.

You can upgrade Rare, Set and Unique, but not non-magic or magic items (no white, gray, blue)

Okay, then is it possible to find a white phase blade outright? I’m playing online. I.E. how do I get one? Currently farming Cow level, but so far, nothing.

Cows on Hell difficulty with no magic find is the best way to find one (if you can kill them in a decent rate that is).
Iirc they can drop op Cows Nightmare (but not sure if the non-elites can drop it and chances will be low).
Late game Nightmare should be able to drop it aswell, but best bet is Hell Cows and having magic find hinders finding white items (it does not affect the chance of a phase blade dropping, but when a phase blade drops it does increase the chance of it become magic or higher quality).

Okay, so the only mode I can farm in in Normal.

I also found a white crystal sword, and according to the tutorials, I just need an Amn, Ort, and Perfect Sapphire. But it doesn’t work.

This is what’s bothering me. I’m not “getting” it. Is there a super simple “for idiots” guide somewhere?

I presume you want to socket it?
1 Ral Rune + 1 Amn Rune + 1 Perfect Amethyst + Normal Weapon = Socketed Weapon of same type

Amn+Ort+Psapphire is upgrading a normal rare weapon to an exceptional rare weapon.
And upgrading cannot be done with white items.
Maybe the Normal is confusing you, it is said about items without magical properties (white) but also about items of the Normal version (in normal/exceptional/elite).
Can be confusing I guess, but if they “normal rare weapon” they would mean a Normal Version of the Weapon with the Rare magical level, “Normal Weapon” would mean normal quality level so not magical or higher.

Is a pretty good site imo. (add a / between / and www)

You cannot upgrade white items (or grey) from normal to exception or elite. No such hodradric cube recipe exists.

Also FYI: a phase blade requires character level 54 to equip (I found it amusing you asked where to find one, then followed up with “I can only farm in normal”)

TONS of phase blades in hell chaos. Just seal pop like a mother and youll have one by the end of a 2 hour session

@SudianX

Well, I’m level 49 and still haven’t gotten the cube from NM A2 yet. This is the problem. I need better gear, and since I am having TERRIBLE luck so far at drop (they’re either for another class or my merc, who now does more damage than me, and in some cases out lives me), I tried thinking of a way to craft something and then just grind up a few levels.

I’m in a damned if I do, damned if I don’t situation. I can’t progress.

why dont you tell us what build you are and we can give u some advise
im slightly confused because you talk about wanting to up to a phase blade… but then talk about runes to build spirit

and i cant even tell if you are playing a caster or a melee character

spirit is for casters and u want a crystal sword or other normal sword with low requirements… if u are a melee character you arnt going to want to be using spirit.

@SwiftKitten

Ugh, here we go again, just like in my last post.

Paladin

Sacrifice 9 of 20
Zeal 9 of 20
Fanaticism 9 of 20
Holy Shield 9 of 20
Defiance 8 of 20

Fire 1
Cold 1
Lightning 1

Prerequisites 1 each

Strength 72 (65 base)
Dexterity 65 (65 base)
Vitality 185 (185 base)

Attack 1815
Damage 193-264
Defense 315

Fire Res 34%
Cold Res 51%
Lightning Res 75%
Poison Res 75%

I never said anything about spirit. I’m not sure where you got that from. Anyway, the way I understood the tutorials is that you could upgrade the Crystal sword to Dimensional, and then to Phase Blade. I guess I’m still confused about what is meant by Normal vs Exceptional vs Elite. Is that like white, blue, and yellow?

Anyway, please advise. I have spent so much gold since moving up to NM, and running back to town to buy more potions and res my merc after any fight that has a named mob in it.

so your a zealot ok…
focus on putting all your points into zeal and fanasism
you do need a better weapon are u playing online or single player
yes u need a better wep, and it should ideally be 1 handed

i wouldnt be looking for a sword though phase blades have terrible damage and are only good for attack speed

normal exceptional and elite are base item types
http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/weaponsandarmor.shtml#normal

try to find a unique or a 1 hand rare mace class wep of the exceptional or elite and ibune it at charsi

if you are online i can toss u somthing, but its acting up and chat donest seem to be working

Why do you want to get the Cube from Nightmare? You get it on Normal and that’s it. Whit a pala you go Holy Fire zealot and just breeze through the Ancient Temple to get the Cube. Unless I missunderstand something.

@SwiftKitten Online (Solo due to extreme social anxiety)

I only read that I will eventually need the Grief runeword on the weapon, and that it is usually paired with a Phase Blade.

I’m still not sure what Normal, Exceptional, and Elite means, after looking over the items on that page. I need visuals. How can I tell one from another by looking at them?

@Indian

LOL I already have the one from Normal. I just listed that as a point of reference as to where I am in the game. It’s been three days in NM Act 2 now… dying repeatedly. I know NM is supposed to hard-ER, but this is ridiculous.

What’s up whit your resistances?

It’s what the build I found online called for. Did I look up a bum build?

Where did you get the biuld from? Because an Ancients Pledge in a paladins shield whit atleast +10 to allres should help you out. But you get penalty to your res in NM. Are you shure they are OK?

facepaw

ok… YES greif is a phaseblade… but unless u are going to be hacking your character, your not making a grief in single player…( its going to take you months of not YEARS to find a Lo rune) so throw that idea out.

you can tell by the name
for each visual model there are three different bases

http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/normal/swords.shtml
http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/exceptional/swords.shtml
http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/elite/swords.shtml

this is what is meant by “normal, exceptional, and elite”

you cant just take a build off online and expect to find the gear they ask for in single player.

you NEVER will find an item your looking for… single player is all about making do with that u find… not about getting the best items of each slot

use the best weapon you can find…

@Indian

Not sure what you mean by “ok.” But here’s the build, I just moved the three single points in Defensive auras to the resists.

https:/www.wowhead.com/diablo-2/guides/zeal-paladin-build-skills-gear

(add the extra / before www)

@SwiftKitten

Wait… so just because I set my online game to a max of 1 player, I can’t get certain things? I’m not playing offline of anything.

Ok. Means they are high enough to add to your surviveability. 45% is OK, since 75% is cap, but putting points to your res auras, will pump that above the cap, if you have enough res from gear. You can make a Spirit sword, it’s not bad for melee in NM. Also I would advise you to check out maxroll.gg or icey-veins.com for better build giudes.
