I have a few nice unique swords I might want to try out, but I feel like for most of the melee builds I’ve seen the recommendation is “enough Strength to use your gear, Dexterity for block chance if you’re using a shield, everything else into Vitality”. And looking at the swords I have, I’d need to dump a lot into Dex just to pick them up. They universally have high Dex requirements in addition to Str. Axes and maces, on the other hand, have much lower Dex requirements, and I’ll be putting points into Str anyway to let me wear the armor I’ll want as a melee character. All else being equal, why would someone choose a sword over an axe? Is there some hidden advantage I’m not seeing? Is this the reason why flails are so popular?
your ar will be higher at end game, but your max dmg might be lower than say, an uber maul.
there is usually a point on swords, it is at the tip. very pointy. do not stab yourself, you might bleed to death.

now to get serious, every class has it’s pros and cons, some classes are faster with different weapons types, so which specific sword and what class you are matter slightly if you’re into min / maxing your characters.
for example, a barbarian using a collosus sword is normal, compared to the collosus blade, fast.
now the best axe, has pretty much the same damage as a CS or CB, and you’re right, you need a lot less dex. so it’s basically style and how much dex you wanna waste.
but zerkers or CB have always been the best to me.

In a general sense sword tend to have a faster attack rate then maxes and axes

As a frenzy barb it is difficult to get away from swords. Bloodletters in the midgame outshine the competition, with pretty much no requirements at all. Late game i always have Lawbringer. Lawbringer cannot be made in axes, and only the caudeceus is a reasonably fast blunt weapon that can use it, but is ultra rate and horrible to repair.
Phasblade is the meta im afraid. Grief in Phasblade with any phaseblade offhand pretty much puts you at the top breakpoint, its just so fast. Shout out to Grief/Death barbs with axes, i love you but i cant be you. I must have Lawbringer.
For me, swords and axes are fine. A few slight changes to blunt weapons would really open them up. At the moment, the best you can achieve is an Oath. Give scourges 6 sockets, let tyrant clubs and scourges be Lawbringers.
Swords need better options. I hate the phase blade skin but it’s apparently the strongest sword in the game in the metrics that matter.
Give me 6 sockets on n a long sword or war awaits skin.
