Is offline the new "meta"?

Just curious how many people are moving over to single player these days.

I started S5 for about an hour before asking myself, “Why?” There’s no point since I’m not in a p8 group, so I’m not playing for ladder, and there are absolutely no changes this season… So I’ve been rocking my single player characters recently.

In hindsight, I’m very grateful we got offline mode at all. I’m well aware of how it could have gone down…

Take it easy, folks.

i mean it kinda is,
blizzard is catering to botters instead of players, so the reasons to play online are rather scarce now unless u can find actual friends to play with. i still do at the start of seasons.

but the spam bots spamming sell sites making helping people in lobby and talking almost impossible. and in-game chat isn’t even functional a third of the time
and the botters ruin the economy in a week.

so basically… there is no " in-game community" which is the main draw of multiplayer games.

because blizzard terrible implementation of trying to port the d3 chat system over, them filtering normal expletives when something bad happens and not just words used as insults. the limited space and most importantly because they prioritize the bots over players.

so yeah, online isnt pulling as much weight because blizzard made it so.

its the same reason i dont go out of my way to recoomend d2:R
i DO out of of my way to tell people to AVOID D4 AND D:I

but its hard to recommend d2:R in its current state.

Heya Kitten! I believe we met in another game briefly a couple of weeks ago  Hope you’re doing alright!

No Latency
No players to hinder my questing
No players to hostile and annoy me
Players 8

What’s there not to love about Offline?

The one and pretty much only time I played online on D2R was during the start with my group of four, we had a ton of fun getting to Hell Baal and trading in the fresh economy.

After that I moved onto single player and haven’t played online since, I’ve tried getting my buddies back together each ladder start but alas, all our individual schedules have changed so it’s pretty much impossible now. :frowning_with_open_mouth:

Wish we had TCP/IP, so glad for the “security issues” that were avoided with its removal.

no pvp, nobody to chat or play with. Literally no reason to finish the game more than once or farm past killing baal hell. There is no content. Wasting time on something i can do with hero editor.

Your options could be limited because you can’t trade (This is assuming you won’t use hero editor and play completely legit).

You probably will find items for most builds but things like Griffon’s Eye, Death Web, and Death Fathom could be pretty tough to find and those enable certain builds that people may want. I’ve been playing offline for close to a year and Death’s Web still eludes me to this day. I found Death Fathom and Griffon’s Eye though. I think I found close to 10 HRs (Vex or higher) before finding Griffon’s Eye, which I wanted soo bad. In online, I could’ve traded a couple of HRs for an average Griffon’s easily.

I sure do love getting a regular Cap with a green gem.

TCP/IP would be the greatest thing to ever re-add.

Cheating is a “You” problem.

Ladder content gets re-added to Single Player regularly on NexusMods.

What’s your motivation to farm past baal hell at sp? There is no in-game content you have not finished at that point. Online you have pvp or exp races at least. At singleplayer this doesn’t excist.

Some motivate themselves with stuff like holy grail, but that only works once tbh.
It would feel like wasted time for ME.

New character/build is what makes the game has great replay value.
There’s no prize for being at the top of the ladder anymore like the old days. People got free copies of WarCraft 3: The Frozen Throne, and World of Warcraft and idk what other prizes in the old times. So it also doesn’t exist today to any value of racing to the top as the ladder because no one remembers or cares in a few months time.

Playing offline and it feels like you loose out on potential coop features…

Online and no player 8…

Congratulations on the lose, lose situation!

People talking about player 8 harming the economy are like Gwyn from Dark Souls, which is desperately trying to keep the flame alive.

Mmm I feel nostalgia in the brains.

3-player TCP/IP with Players 8.

Single player is all about beating hell Baal for me.

Online is motivating because the right find can bring you untold wealth.

I am a SP player since 20 years. I also make mods for d2/d2r, because its setting is largely flawed compared to the core structure of the game, which is simple but masterful creation. SP is the real way to play this game, since it was designed for SP mainly. Actually a spicy info, which not many people know, d2 was in its first design only SP game, but then Blizzard asked Blizzard North to make it multiplayer, a thing which came a bit suddenly, and hence the multiplayer was not much developed, but only layered upon the actual game, and with obvious parts left unfinished (clans for example, which some creative person brought back in d4, god bless). Also why in the sake of all games, a strategy game developer would care about multiplayer in an age where people were buying games to EVADE being with other people!!

roflmfd2   :men_wrestling: thanks for the question

Why not just play NL? I mean, how do you trade in single player? This is a trading game.
If you arn’t trading, in order to make your PVP char, then why bother playing this game? Endgame is PVP. Or are you just trying to kill Baal or whatever? Why?

David Brevik, one of the developers of Diablo, is on Twitch with his wife. I think the channel was “JungleQueen” or something. I remember asking him “Was there any classes that were cut in development?”
He did answer he had a Blood Mage, and a Cleric that were cut from the game.
Blood Mage was using Health as both means of survival and resource.
The Cleric was scrapped because it was a support class for multiplayer, making it a bad class for Solo.
That being said, I don’t know for sure if it was only SP in mind in development after he was talking about the Cleric.

I don’t think that’s true at all d2 had a very robust multiplayer experience for its time.

Just like diablo 1 did.

Maybe I expressed myself badly. I meant the online battle.net thingie, not the general local multiplayer games. So in a sense they were not prepared to design something that would go for massive online play, but they had to do it in the end.

i dunno, i did what blizzard wanted me to do, and just quit playing altogether.

This game has no prizes/rewards or in game historical tracking of past season champions…

Characters/builds are so unbalanced they do not even compete against one another… I mean, even the illustrious PvP has rules of engagement, limitations, and exclusions - in an effort to make balance (example, the “Halloween Meleemania Tournament”)… highlighting, that it is up to the individual, or groups of agreeing individuals - that set the bar.
As such “meta” is what lives in your mind… or what you enjoy.

In my opinion, ladder is nothing more than an opportunity for folks with a job/life/interested-in-the-real-world an opportunity to make a ladder only runeword to port back to non-ladder… - … it is otherwise a display of leisure time (unemployed?) and willingness to devote (sacrifice/endure/torture) your life to a video game.
I mean, a recent thread in this very forum is asking for TZ’s “random” schedule to be made public so “people/families” can schedule their life around - the game.
Think about that.
That is the mindset of ladder “players” you attempt to engage with… outside of the regular guys just trying to make a runeword to put back to everyday life.

Hmmm.
i actually have “friends” in the game, so playing offline does not appeal to me.
I enjoy trading, and gifting items, as well as being recipient to gifts.
So, offline single player does not appeal to me… but remember…
“meta” is what lives in your mind… or what you enjoy.

“I” am also amused at the perception of - offline is legit play… when hero-editor exists.
I just did a quick google, without visiting links, looking for a cost… I did not see any… is it free?
So, offline there is a mod that allows unlimited quantity, of any/all items to be downloaded…
I mean, at least online characters need to collect/craft/trade, or, the cheaters need lighten their wallet.

And again;
“meta” is what lives in your mind… or what you enjoy.
But please don’t pretend offline is somehow “more legit” than online…
Not that OP did outright, but, seems to be trending around here lately… and it’s laughable.

Really need to stop posting when adult beverage’n… but, there it is.
