Is MF broken in D2R?

I just did 20 Chaos Runs. Solo Online. Not 1 Yellow or Orange item. 2 set items.

Almost 500% MF and nothing dropping. It seems like if your character is mowing through things - MF means NOTHING at all.

I drop to 100% MF and use mostly runeword items and +skills. I start finding items again… It makes no sense. Even people I play with say the same thing… the more MF they put on - it seems like their drops get worse. Even at the same clear speed.

Am I missing something?

you are not wrong i use a necro with enigma topazed shako war travs and a 39% gheeds and have 250% mf. i find more this way then running 400%-600% mf on a barb or even those doing it on a sorc.

Because you’re killing way more stuff at a faster rate

Kills per hour is how you get more pulls at the loot lever. Magic find helps for things like greater chance to get uniques/sets and of course magic items, but if it takes you 3x as long to kill stuff with 500MF as 100MF, you’re doing it wrong.

You need to balance MF gear with kill speed. As long as your MF gear doesn’t affect your kill speed, you’re good. Also RNG being super low for a LOT of the items you may want in this game, 20 runs of chaos is not enough. Not even close. You can go thru dry spells of nothing even remotely good dropping for dozens and dozens of games before RNGesus shines his light back on you.

Welcome to the OG ARPG. Enjoy your stay!

Just 20 chaos is nothing. You are way too soon to say MF is broken.

You need to do like 1000 to 5000 runs to tell me the difference.

Also, LlamaSC did a video on the difference between total MF and effective MF.

The more MF you stack the less effective MF you get. Above 500 MF, each 1 MF point you add, you only get about 0.1-0.2 effective MF point for uniques.

The rule is simple: More magic find is always better, as long as it doesn’t affect your kill speed. Yes there are diminishing returns but it still helps, just helps a lot less over 300% (there are graphs aplenty you can google showing the curve). If you want to go from 300 to 500% MF but it halves your kill speed, you’re doing it wrong. You’re better off staying at 300% and killing twice as fast.

Again, Kills per hour, assuming you’re trying to be as efficient at farming as possible.

I switched from Occy, Shako, Skullders, Goldwarp to full Tal Rasha set for my Sorc.

Definitely lost a bit of MF but gained a lot of damage and resistance due to Tal set bonus.

I am still getting a lot of good stuffs. I did not notice anything significant in terms of getting good items when I droped from 550MF to 440MF.

If anyone want to give me some free 7 MF sc b/c you don’t want MF, I will happily take it off your hand.

Is this slot machine broken? I pulled the lever 20 times and didn’t win anything of note. It must be broken, right?

whats an orange item?

Pretty simple yet so many players seem to get it wrong. They start talking about some optimal mf number, (200, 250, 300, 400 etc) as if it’s actually a thing. It’s all relative to content and clearspeed.

All these “MF is broken” topics are hilarious. Just wild opinions and conspiracy theories.

For once post some real data guys, make a research, write down every uniqe/set/rare with certain amount of MF like 250%, then do it again on more MF , 500 for example. On good example, preferably few hundreds runs.

180 is the sweet spot
Anything above has heavy diminishing returns
180 doubles your chances of an item being unique

Magic finding is not just about uniques.

For a sorc, you can maintain really good power (+skills) without much sacrifice. Occy, shako, chance guards, and war trav alone will get you like 190% without any power sacrifice. Add a skulders for another 90% for only a 1 skill sacrifice and you can do a nagel instead of soj to crest 300% with only losing 1 or 2 skills.

Exactly. I have sorc with 500 MF and do AT just as fast as any other sorc.

basicly going above 600% will start to slow your killing speed.

blue ring with 40 mf exist  Fortuitous prefixe 11-15% MF Fortune Suffixe 15-25% MF

double perf roll for 40% mf magic rings :3…rare ones cap to 25% but u can get fcr and sexy resists along XD

Ya need hundreds and eventually thousands of runs. Next.

Been playing D2 since 2001. I’ve always found my best items with 0-little MF on. Sure, more MF I have gotten more rare/uniques drop, but not my best found items. To me, Kill speed is always > than more MF. Since launch of D2R it seems 179% is the sweet spot. Found a Shako from Meph in less than 13 runs plus other goodies. More MF than that even doing 100’s-1,000’s of runs I have found nothing of value. Kill Speed > more MF for me.

It is the same as D2. More mf does not guarantee better drops. MF only means a marginal increase of the chance that the drops you do get will be unique, rare or magic. As said before, kill speed is your greatest ally.

Personally, I shoot for ~250%mf on my sorc.

And who said it is??
