I got a Cold Sunder charm and tried out Frozen Orb with my hybrid Sorc. The damage was really really bad.
Is going full out Blizzard with the Sunder charm really worth it? I also worry about getting 1 shotted by the Frost Nova some monsters give off when you kill them.
I think Frozen Orb is the cooler looking skill, but with a Sunder Charm Blizzard eats everything for breakfast.
As Bosco already noted, Sunder made hybrid sorcs obsolete, focus on 1 element is always better now in the endgame and with Blizzard you can even do that with crap gear.
You can go full orb and full blizzard btw and only miss out on a few points in the orb synergy. One you have enough +skills you can start dropping some points out of CM as you can’t go below -195% anyway.
I don’t think people quiet understand the amount of power creep cold sorc has really gotten in D2R.
-Mana burn effectively removed.
-Able to fully use both Orb AND Blizzard.
-No immunities OR resistances to deal with.
-No chance of getting gibbed by block animation.
-Larger visual range.
-Longer Frozen Armor duration (minor to be fair)
-Higher intensive to use a TP + Boss pack kill play style
While things like manaburn and blocking do effect all classes, they could be very lethal to sorcs before, along with things like Vipers. Everything else though give you a build that does like 70% more overall damage, FAR more single target damage, and zero immunities to worry about… AND it was already one of the most played builds.
At a certain gear level and a high level you can start pulling points back out of CM because you can’t benefit from more than -195% cold res. At that point you end up just a few points off maxing Ice bolt/ice blast/glacial spike/blizzard/frozen orb.
You end up with a choice of like -5 to -7 points in ice bolt, ice blast, or glacial spike depending on if you want to maximize Orb, Blizzard, or single target damage.
Either way the difference is pretty small, it’s like a 7-10% nod at a different spell. End result is a build that ends up with a 2.6k FO(does around 45k at explosion point) and a 30k+ Blizzard. It’s literally as strong as having both a Blizzard AND an Orb sorc from before… + no immunities.
Over the D2R patches Cold sorc is quite objectively 2x to 2.5x as strong as it every was in LoD.
Is the Maxroll Blizz sorc damage variant build the one to go off of? There are several variations and with limited respecs, I don’t want to mess something up.
I believe so – that is, to max cold mastery if you have cold sunder. I’m not entirely sure if it’s better to put points in the synergies first before maxing cold mastery tho. That’s how I did it, and steamrolled, so probably fairly irrelevant.
I brought CM up to -100% with gear then did synergies.
Barely geared or decked out, even without a Sunder charm, Blizzard Sorceresses paired with an Insight merc absolutely demolish any and all content in the game.
With a Sunder charm? My god, I dare say the game balance is broken. Fun, but broken lol.
Did you not read the high IQ dev post where they said they tested it on that BUM blizz sorc they gave you and said it wasn’t OP? Clearly 99% of the people who saw this coming are wrong and the devs were right. They’re probably going to buff cold mastery so it gives -res AND +dmg
I use frozen orb and blizzard. They took out global cool downs so you can do all sorta combo stuff that makes you character look like they are having a fit and just shatters the screen. Like my go to is Bliz then cancel the animation with FO, cast another FO then then back to Bliz/orb combo. You can even spit out a G spike between FOs in the combo if you want to dump mana like a bad habit. But I find it is not necessary. Still not up to the damage of lighting or fire in 8 man games. On the other hand in a one man game, either spell is clever and you can smoke and drink with one handed farm to oblivion with cold. No way to go wrong on cold atm.
