yes it’s click baiting, I could have used a more modest title like integrating multiple copies into the game but my intention is to start the discussion nonetheless.
as we all know a lot of long time players buy multiple copies just to be able to use p8 online at any time, that’s exactly where my proposal sets off, since people have already been doing this, why can’t Blizzard integrate this into a single copy of the game so you don’t need to run multiple instances in the background, suppose now you can buy this ‘token’ (just to give it a name for the time being) that you can activate in the game, lets say token p3 or token p8, you can however only buy up to 2 tokens (p3 and p8), we can assume two scenarios for a bit more details and further discussion,

when you create an online game, the activated token still takes place, so even there are only 2 other players joined the game, since it’s a token p8 game already so all 3 players would benefit from a p8 game

for any online games as long as there are other players joining, the token gets deactivated, so even it’s a token p8 game you have started once there are players joining in, the game itself will roll back to the amount of actual players automatically
why encouraging players spending more money? a harsh and realistic answer is to provide a financial motivation for the devs, this community is crying for online p8 for a long time now, and we all know deep down that the dev is not going to cope because this game is a dead horse already and they have other cash cows to take care of, but with this proposal and approach, we could hope it turns out to be a win-win for both parties.
and this can only be the beginning, we could have more ‘tokens’ down the road, for some examples, ‘token of more inventory’, ‘token of better inventory management’ so you can access different characters in the same screen, ‘token of stackable items’ and even ‘token of static map’, just to throw a few ideas out there.
with this, the game would provide more income for the dev and in turn dev starts to put more features into the game and more players would return hence the community will grow, all I see this is a positive cycle.
how about ‘broken’ economy? there’s no economy to break, this will bring a ‘new’ economy for sure, price will be inflated by a bit or a lot, but it can also benefit the new players they could have an easier time to get started, for example, now 10 perfect amethysts could fetch you an ist or so, but with the new economy it could land you a vex or so.
is this system fair to the players who don’t want to pay for extra ‘tokens’? apart from p8, the tokens are only supposed to be improvements for QoL, they shouldn’t be an upper hand by any means, for example, ‘token of resurrection’ to bring your dead HC characters back to life is a bad idea and it will just break the game, so if you want online p8 at your finger tip you buy the tokens.
this would also vitalize the online community in a way that now you need to aim at >p1 farming, a long of meta builds would be re-invested and looked upon again, for now end-game p1 often gets boringly easy.
or you can go back to single-player game, but the community is slowly dying and player base is bleeding out because the game isn’t rolling in cash as we all know hence this topic.
