Introduced a friend

Casual gamer. Works full time. Has two kids, ex-wife, etc. He loves the graphics, thinks the game has great atmosphere.

Then we started hitting the wall. I started hearing things like, “Dude, its been forever since we’ve seen something drop that seems good to use.”
Then we hit another wall, damage type immunes. I told him we need to just skip the enemy, “That seems stupid. So we’re just gonna keep remaking the game until the enemies in the area are killable?”

It got me thinking. There’s a lot of systems in D2 that did not age well. He’s decided the game isn’t for him, and we’ve gone back to playing D3 more.

Diablo 2 isn’t for everyone. Most of the time it takes dedication, perseverance and a whole lot of patience to advance in the game. And for just a teeny little sliver of time, Lady Luck showers those hard to find items at you.

Best of luck in whatever other games he plays.

Good idea. D2 does not offer instant gratification and if farming for days, weeks, months and even years, to complete that perfect build, isn’t for you, it is better to find a different game that is for you.

Its not about aging well, its about current gamers who want everything on silver plate. Diablo 2 will teach you how to deal with situation in multiple different ways.

But sure, if you dont want to use brain to deal with problem, diablo 3 is solution.

I am a casual gamer now I had some holiday awhile back and made my infinity. I then had another 2 weeks off and farmed keys to get torches and made my enigma. Now that I have a few high end gear I play casual because the days off I had was no holiday without this covid stuff going on. Also I know my characters won’t expire so if I leave and decided to come back maybe somethings would be useful.

They need to have an option to allow monsters to respawn after a bit…it is indeed dumb to constantly remake games imo

Also it would relieve some stress on the server. Would this also apply to bosses or just regular, champion, and unique mobs? Also what would a balanced time to respawn be 5+ minutes?

It’s rough getting irl friends into d2 and games of this sort. I got a good friend to give this game a go a few weeks ago at the beginning of the year and he really seemed to be enjoying it. I was really excited for him. We made it to act 4 just before Diablo. The next day he had moved onto a new game for similar reasons as your friend. It’s a bit of a bummer.

that’s sort of why diablo 2 is better, the good drops are worth so much more. you don’t get them every day, or even every other day… and the super epics come like once every two weeks at best… i find that more exciting than just… having everything all the time.

like i just found a ber, and could switch up my build finally, made CoH, put on the arach i found and slipped on a wisp, put mages back on instead of chancies… and took out the um in my gerke’s for a 5/5 lit facet. basically same mf, fcr, but better res and more dmg now. and it took me quite a while to get all these upgrades together. but i guess that sort of grind isn’t for everyone.

and i’m still not fully done my sorc… i still want +lit fhr gc, slightly nicer amulet, nicer boots (mine are eth and will break eventually), and a nicer fcr ring… and my charms aren’t that nice.

the difficulty of game

Starcraft 1 > Starcraft 2

Diablo 2 > Diablo 3

old mechanics period

Just show him a fully geared up character with BIS gear so he can get motivated to work towards that

Damn it sounds like your buddy has absolutely no concept of what he’s getting into by playing D2 which can turn anybody off. D2 definitely requires a lot of knowledge to excel at and also a steel mind to stay motivated through droughts.

Correct.

It really is. At launch it was great, all my buddies from WoW came over. Some friends that I know who are casual into other games came over.

This “buddy” I introduced to D2 - he bought the D2/3 battle chest that’s sold in the Blizz shop this past weekend. I’d say he got his money’s worth. He also plays the Dark Souls games with me, so he isn’t afraid of challenge, nor is he afraid of having to use his brain. That’s the problem with all the comments that want to insult him/I for the plain fact that D2’s systems aged badly. Its a fact, get over it. It turns players away, regardless of player type.

I did, then I showed him a stream of someone doing 2000 lower kurast runs on /players8 to get a Ber and Jah rune. And he noped tf out. Also, it was somewhere in hell after he’d used his third respect he wanted to respec again and when I told him its limited he says, “Well that’s retarded.”

I think at this point it should be clear that this game will not be interesting for him. This game will not be satisfying for someone who likes that kind of instant gratification D3 will provide. As you said, this was a wall.

Anything after that, in my opinion is just excuses. Like you don’t plan your character in souls games at all, give me a break.

Think what you want, we played Dark Souls 1 and 3 together, and will play Elden Ring. There’s plenty of other games I’ve played with him, and that he’s enjoyed himself. Doesn’t change facts that the limited respec, significant time investment requirement for the chance at playing high end builds, damage type immunities, 80-120 SOJ to spawn the Pandemonium Event, and plenty of other design systems in D2 turn people away.

People like you remind me of those kids sitting alone at their own table in the cafeteria, who think they’re cooler than everyone else because they do their own thing. Then turn around and complain when more people don’t enjoy the medium of entertainment you do.

Two sides to this coin, honestly.

There’s people who don’t enjoy instant gratification or games that are terribly easy and don’t like it when people don’t enjoy their medium of entertainment.
You can’t please everyone. Games from Diablo 2’s era just happened to be an entirely different design philosophy than what is used now.

Diablo 2 takes time and effort. Rewards you with satisfaction and that sweet sweet dose of dopamine.

Diablo 3, Path of Exile, Wolcen, Grim Dawn etc are games you can jump into and experience everything on a casual basis. (requires less than 20 hours invested to see most, if not all content) and their grind is significantly smaller to achieve end-game builds.

D2 is a slot machine disguised as an arpg. End game for most is skipping to the boss and pulling that lever, hoping to hit the jackpot. The game is very easy even though these guys say otherwise. Like its laughably easy to beat. All these boomers giving you the “back in my day” speech need to get over themselves. As a veteran D2 player myself, immunities are lazy game design but no worries…just skip them duh. Why even kill monsters in a game about killing monsters? Lol.

To the OP, you say nothing of what builds you used. And if between the two of you, you cannot deal with an immunity type, then well it is a lot your fault for not making a character that a new player can work well with.

A friend of mine and I just introduced his girl to the game. We made sure to take care of this, and explained to her BEFORE starting what the limitations of her character choice is until very late game. She is having a blast with it. (and we are in late Hell difficulty at the moment).

Right because HR’s just drop like candy. That or you use a trade site. Filthy casual is the more apt term.

Cool story bro.

Every player needs to start taking immunities into account by the end of Nightmare. Fortunately, every class has ways around immunities, whether that means building into a second or even third damage source via skills and gear, or avoiding the immune monsters altogether. Of course, if you have one or more people you regularly play with, as in your case OP, then it’s even easier.

But anyway, not all games are for all people. Personally, I think that D3 is a complete and utter snooze-fest with the worst itemization in any game ever. And that’s OK. Different strokes for different folks.
