I had been playing the game super safe. Always stood in the back and let the traps lead the way. Made it to Chaos Sanctuary (NM) and was heading to the second portal when 8 Venom Lords and Infector of Souls spawned surrounding me. (Extra Strong, Spectral, Extra Fast)
There was absolutely no way to anticipate the attack or escape. They spawned perfectly around me and I was dead with a single swing of them all.

RIP Level 58 hero, I had built 80% all vitality just for this type of situation but they dealt 1k damage within the first few frames of spawning around me.
The only thing you could say to this is that I shouldn’t have tried this level until grinding more. But in every situation up to the moment nothing could deal more than 100dmg to me and there was no way to anticipate the perfect number of mobs spawning around me and one shotting me considering they had the perfect boosts on spawn. Frustrating end to playing the game. Not going to grind from scratch that was a lot of loot and gear gone way to easily.
Sorry for the loss, I do understand the pain with venom lords though. When I farm keys in hell they occasionally are in the area around nihlathak and can be very harsh with how quick they can own me or my merc.
Sorry to hear that OP, but to some of us that is impressive regardless. The few times I did stick my toes into the HC pool I think I made it to level 12? To be honest in the state of the servers, it’s impressive that people get to nightmare and beyond in hardcore. I mean, I have had multiple DCs just today alone and it wasnt during peak traffic.
So bravo. I hope your next one does better. I wish I could offer some insight or advice but you likely know far more than I do.
If i was going to go HC (and I still may just for funsies) I would definitely be rolling a Summoner Necro.
sometimes when there is the dog leg, “J” shape seal pattern for venom lords, they will randomly spawn abnormally close to the second seal which is in the dead end area; this can be much more worse with a mercenary who draws aggro. really, anyone who is playing hardcore and is nervous about dying should teleport there, spawn the venom lords and just walk back through the chaos sanctuary from pandemonium fortress and hit them from the open side. take the 1.5 extra minutes to not die
From previous experience the group normally spawned closer to the center so I thought I was moving away from their location. Unbeknownst that was actually Infector of Souls’ spawn location and the perfectly wrong direction. I haven’t studied that spawn to see if they spawn exactly in the same spot every time but I’ll probably test it.
I’ve got a few other characters moving into NM/HC now around level 30. But, this was my loot grinder and was able to melt just about every monster without much risk.
Sorry to hear that. My barb 79 died yesterday and i have no clue how(world stone keep 2 hell) . Its ridiculous as i am basicly playing same barb on SC for weeks without dying. And i just went from 3000 life to 0 in second.
Congrats on level 79. The lag spikes are actually quite deadly. Countless times the spike has left me surrounded by mobs and threatened my safe play. A few weeks ago the DC’s were bad but I haven’t experience many recently.
I try to anticipate those lag spikes because there are micro ones happening every minute and major ones every 5-10 minutes. It only takes 200-750ms desync to make a disaster.
Someone earlier mentioned about being surprised anyone would play Hardcore. I would respond with, I can’t imagine playing any other way. The game in mind-numbingly boring if there is no risk to the reward. That first kill of every boss is always rush on every character as you perform a live test that you have paced your character correctly. There is no going back and every heart beat might be your last.
This is how all RPGs should be played. Respawning/failing forward is just crutch that everyone has gotten used to.
I think it would be a nice QoL to resurrect hardcore characters. It could cost much. Let’s say, 1M gold from shared stash. C’mon, it is 2021, is it so hard to implement? I don’t want make new character if I missclicked once!
