So this has been going on for while, but last night i really saw the negative effects of this -
There has been this chat bug, where sometimes when chatting in game your text won’t appear and no one can see what you are saying.
however last night, i noticed another extreme of this bug where i was chatting, and my message was appearing, but no one could see my messages. i know this to be true because one person in our group was streaming, and i was watching his stream - my messages weren’t appearing.
what’s worse is, he was chatting in game, but i couldn’t see his messages at all.
whats even worse is, me and another player could see each other’s messages and chat, but we could not see anyone else’s.
the people who couldn’t see our chats could see theirs and vice versa

Also noticed:
Item linking breaks, so when you click on an item in chat it’ll show a prior item linked in chat.
“player#notyou has left the game” (noticed by friends in game)
“player#notyou” “you talking” (in chat)

Yes this has been an issue since day one and is so infuriating… I have almost quit playing multiple times because it is so hard to trade and play with other people. It pretty much ruins the community. I haven’t seen a single dev post talk about fixing or addressing this issue. Hey devs how about we fix the game instead of worrying about adding more features… We need this to be a bigger topic and be pushed to the top so it can get fixed.

Also happens sometimes to me.
I noticed that sometimes you can even see messages from players from different games/channels !
I was farming in private game while I saw an in-game (white text) ‘tp plz’, which was obviously from some different game/chat, as I was alone in my game. But just a second later, when I pressed enter to check what the hell was that, the message was no longer there. Very weird.
So it almost looks like sometimes the in game channels does not match the correct game for some reason. That would explain why you can’t see your own messages - you are sending them to some different channel/game, without the game showing it to you, but someone else can see it.

Yes this bug is really annoying.
There is a way to find out whom in the game you can reach by chat:
once you are in the “Game” chat channel, you can type /who to see what other players from the game are in your “chat bubble”. Players listed there will be able to see your messages, others won’t

I have the same issue and many friends reported it because we used discord and we couldn’t our see message in game.

fix it please… such a huge issue!
I don’t understand how such a game ruining bug ever made it through testing let alone hasn’t been fixed this long after the release of the game. It’s extremely reproducible since it happens every game. I don’t think I’ve joined a game yet where all 8 players were in the same chat. What’s the point of playing online when you can’t talk to the other people you’re playing with? I would bet this bug alone has caused a large part of the player base to stop playing. Most people probably didn’t even realize it was a bug and just thought this community didn’t like talking to them since they weren’t seeing responses to their messages.
Please focus more on bug fixes and quality of life improvements. What good are balance changes when you’ve already lost the majority of your player base? I know I won’t be sticking around for ladder or 2.4 if this isn’t fixed.

For the Love of F fix this. Stop making new content until you fix the damn chat bugs. It’s so obnoxious trying to trade, or linking gear to friends in game and it’s just busted.

2001 chat works perfectly, new and improved version comes out 20 years later and… chat’s busted. This is why you’re having so much trouble blizzard. Keep doing nothing about it though! Bestest way to grow your collective player base I’m sure. Rest assured I wouldn’t own this game if it hadn’t been bought for me without my prior knowledge due to just this kind of nonsense from actiblizzard. Now that I do own it, all I can hope is you’ll fix CHAT for this MULTIPLAYER game… Surprise me Blizz… I dare you.

press enter to get the chat to pop up
select the drop down arrow
select game.
it likes to play games with where it selects to when you enter a game. and when you whisper someone it locks to that until you select away from it. not sure why they made it like this. its nice if youre chatting with that ONE person, but for most of us its a nuisance lol
please fix the chat!!! essential function of the game and yet it’s been broken for this long, c’mon
