I'm new to D2R, what's the difference between "play" and "lobby" in launch screen?

  1. Is there a difference between launching the game directly by clicking on “play” button and going into the lobby and creating new game?

  2. What does “convert to expansion” button do?

  3. Why is there Online/Offline tab? I don’t see any difference when I play in either tab?

Sorry I couldnt find any answer that is intended for complete newbies like me. Every forum and help files seems to assume that you’ve played this game for some time and know the basics

  1. Both options create online games, but when you click on “Play”, it creates a game with a long, random name and password and is intended for when you just want to play your online characters alone. It’s functionally the similar to creating a passworded game in the lobby, but there you can specify the name and password so others can join (if the know it) and you can quit and re-join your own game.

  2. When you create a character, you can make it for the original D2 game, referred to as “Classic”, or for the later “Lord of Destruction” (LoD) expansion. Classic chars can later be converted into Expansion chars, but not the other way around. The expansion added an extra Act and a whole bunch of new items, and is what most people play.

  3. Online characters are stored online and allow you to play with other people, while Offline characters are stored on your machine and can only be played solo.

these are rather basic questions for sure but they are easy to answer

  1. the “play” button creates a game with no name or password. in single player this obviously doesn’t matter as can never make a game name or password. but in online if u click “play” no one can join your game unless they are a friend and u have freind list join enabled or you send them an invite or they request an invite. it also means you can’t leave and rejoin the same game. ( and have the same map/ enemies dead, to pick up your dead body)… overall clicking the “play” button… while faster gives u less options… i always go to lobby and make a game name and password. the only downside to it is takes a few more seconds to do. Although i guess its theoretically possible for someone to guess your game name and password. passworded games don’t appear on the games list for anyone

  2. not much i can add to technomancers point there, unless u want to play the non expansion with less stuff there is no reason you shouldn’t check this box… druid and assasin are expansion only, as are runes, charms, act 5. and a bunch of other things.

  3. offline means you are playing offline with characters stored locally on your own computer and not blizzard servers. no one can join your game… your minimap will be saved between games until you swap difficulties. and u wont have to worry about ping. your stash and share stash are also local, and u have an unlimited number of characters u can make.

Thank you so much! convert to expansion button wasn’t clickable so I was just wondering
