A week might not sound like much time, but this was the first time in a long time me and my dad actually both played a game together. D2 was the first game we ever really played together, and so it was honestly such a nostalgic experience, us playing through the game. I literally put everything off besides work, playing 4-5 hours a day, and all day that first weekend (I’m normally lucky to get 2 hours a day to play).
Welp, Friday night I’d decided to just start farming Mephisto on Nightmare, since me and my dad agreed not to progress the story unless we were both on, so was hoping to get some phat lewtz for us.
Well, I fell asleep while playing. While holding my controller, apparently. At some point I regained consciousness enough to just go to bed like a normal person.
I honestly had no idea what was going on when I went to log on the next morning, wondering why some of my characters were suddenly missing, but others weren’t. Considering I’d never heard of this happening (usually it’s ALL characters are missing), I immediately had a bad feeling.
I’d see a few posts about it, but I would’ve never believed how remarkable easy it easy to delete a character, that a sleeping human being could not only DELETE my main character, but also repeat the process for my bank-alts.
It honestly baffles me that Blizzard could release a product in this day and age and be unable to restore a character. That’s about as basic a feature as you could hope to have.
Thing is, I’m not even mad. I’m freaking bummed about it. Here, me and my dad were having this awesome time, and through what I could only describe as a freak accident, it brought our good time to a halt. The salt on the wound was that I didn’t just lose my Druid in Hell mode, but that I also lost the Necromancer who I’d hoarded the best gear we’d come across, and was planning to play up as my next character.
It just soured the entire experience. Hell, it’s soured my whole weekend; I figured me and my dad would probably spend the whole weekend playing. Now we’re both just so disgusted about the incident, it killed any of the fun we were having.
Really hope Blizzard takes some of the feedback seriously and implements some additional safeguards, both making adding additional measures for deleting characters, and more importantly, maintaining SOME kind of data, that restorations are possible. Because how can you hope to offer customer service of any kind, if you don’t have even the most basic tools?
Either way… man, this whole thing was just a total buzz-kill. Replaying the game with my dad was just such a special experience, to have it cut short like that… it just sucks.
