How to transfer my characters?

I copied my single player files from original D2 into the D2R folder (didn’t see a specific sub-folder for saves) and they aren’t showing up in-game. I decided to make a new character on D2R just to find where the files are saved but didn’t see any new file created in the folder. Tried searching online for the specifics of transferring characters but found nothing. Anybody know what I need to do?
