How to improve staves

So i came to conclusion that two-handed staves should be improved somehow and I would like to hear opinions. I would like to implement it into my D2R mod eventualy.

I have been only briefly thinking about it and I have two ideas:

1) Staves will have more + skills
For example you find Short staff with +5 Fire bolt

2) Staves will have +% elemental damage as basic mod even on white weapons
You for example find War staff with +12% Lighting damage

So what do you think guys, would one of these ideas worth using two handed staves, or maybe both? Or maybe you have some other ideas? Keep in mind I want both one handed orbs and two handed staves to be usefull, I dont want to buff two haned staves to extreme so its just way too good over orbs.

these dont seem like bad ideas.

i wouldnt go higher than 5 for + skills and doing elemental damage mods would need need to keep it in a normla range… but that sounds fine to be 12% is fine

might make that new zod staff useful

All 2 handers should have higher tiers

Sorc orb can roll + 3 fire skill? Staves can roll +4 or 5

All 2handers should have an extra socket at larzuk

Larzuk a GF, have 1 or 2 socket odds

Unique & set class items should roll staff mod

Meaning your Mang song can compete with Obsession which can have staffmods

There are three major disadvantages to staves.

The first is that they have less possible +skills than an Orb + Shield combo. However, staves can use runewords, which Orbs effectively cannot. Adding higher staff mods (like +5 Fireball) will actually overpower stave runewords. So really what is needed is for rare Staves to be able to spawn with +3 or +4 to Sorceress Skills.

The second is that they have significantly less faster cast than an Orb and Shield combo. I have a thread on this, but basically it should be pretty simple to add higher level Faster Cast mods to grant rare Staves up to 60% Faster Cast. I have that as one of the small changes that would help the game. Perhaps alternatively you could add Faster Cast to white Staves as that wouldn’t necessarily overpower the current runewords.

The third is that they have less defensive ability than a shield, both in less resistances, and in the lack of an ability to block. I suggested in my thread on Base Weapons that base staves should gain a “Parry” effect that would mimic the Dodge skill. However, that might be a bigger modification than you can implement?

orbs can also get up to 60 life / 80 mana auto mod. slightly useful.

add 1-20% chance to block attack when wielding a staves

Its impossible to block without shield

but assassin can block with 2 claw

Yes but she is designed with blocking with two claws. Its special case.

Staves should roll with random FHR, FCR, and All Res automods along with their random staff mods.

You need to hit your breakpoints and have competitive defenses

Double the amount of affixes on them since they are 2 handers. Or go with regular number of affixes but double their value.

Stop abusing them
