How to Deal with Dry Spells

POV: You just spent 5 hours MFing and its all the time you have in the week. Its been a month since an elite unique dropped… and its a Flamebellow.

You find 5 cathans rings and all blues with 350 MF running trav and Chaos Sanc…

How do you keep the magic when youre burnt out, bored, and getting nothing from RNG?

My personal technique is to lose motivation and get back to real life until I feel like punishment again.

U?

I pretty much quit after 2-3 weeks of ladder until next ladder. :grinning:
That’s my solution.

That’s not really a solution

With Blizzard’s lack of pro activity

Leaving after 2 weeks to then Coming back to next ladder to the same “no content” can only lead to faster quitting

I just play a couple of hours, if I find nothing, go watch some youtube and such until the next day. I did the bulk of my Ladder time in the first month, took a break for a week, then just play 2 hours a night after work, then 4-5 hours on my days off. Things take spells. I have not found a High Rune yet this season, but found a Tal Ammy, Ik Armor, and a couple of others things during July 4th weekend, and last night a Wraith Flight, and today a Ravenlore. Had insane good luck on my two Torches for this season as well; near perfect Sorc, and perfect Barb. Pretty much now just chilling, hoping to hit at least 1 high rune for the ladder and waiting for info on what to expect for 2.5. It’ll make my decision if I’ll play Ladder 2 or stick to non-ladder and work back on my other characters like my MA Sin (that I upped a Nat’s Boots for on Ladder).

Your first step in circumventing a dry spell is to stop gaming.

I try new stuff. Got bored of mfing and key grinding, so I made a hork barb. Still enjoying that actually since it doesn’t take much focus, working on a paladin build. Its just a process.

I just do things that are fun for me.

PvP, lvling, helping someone or real life / other games.

I don’t get why you guys get burned out. Play the game for fun and loot will come on it’s own.

I build a new build when I hit a dry spell. Like I had luck this ladder with my pally and sorc getting good drops early. I hit a super dry spell and so I in the last few days made a necro and pimped him out with like beast, pride, and enigma and full inventory of skillers. A break in play style helps. So does building crap I would never build early on.

i give myself a lvling goal so i don’t think about drops. like… getting half a bar today, or a full bar (at lvl 96) is the goal. the items o nthe way are bonus

I just start playing my favorite character, which is my throwing barb, i dont have any expectations. What helped me is trying to max my gold, its something you CAN focus on and it will net you some other stuff along the way.

Play a different game. Seriously, this game is so outdated and crappy. They won’t make any decent adjustments and killed the game with the removal of online modding

^Mod server community in a nutshell.

Seriously though, nothing changes. Play the game when/if you feel like it. Items come, or they don’t. Sink enough hours into it and frankly it just all starts to feel the same.

Uhhgh its so tough… because I like the achievement of a particular build. For example, a full tals sorc. I had one, then lag and 120s disconnect time means death (HC). Or I’ve had 4 chars PKd from public ear hunters pretending to help rush in HC.

I’m an achiever and when I get there, its great dopamine. But then quickly plummets. And when youre like me - I see every many other players as tools rather than companions. There are fantastic exceptions where you make an Act1-5 walk game, and youre basically the Fellowship of the SOJ. But most of the time, I’m using other players unless I am explicitly joining a game to help them out (which I do alot).

But endgame content… my god. Just MFing lvl 85+ areas? To find an item that could be acquired with $10 real money or FG. Saving 50 hours. And the repetition ultimately dilutes motivation, builds are so niche. Like horker barb in trav.

The reward schedule feels way off. I understand RNG, but I feel RNG is seen as as a religion rather than a dynamic. The math is ofd. It feels like the game is very inaccessible to casual players. And lots of folks on these forums will simply say “good” to that. But that inhibits the economy from evolving, and player base from growing. In 5 seasons from now - what will be the growth?

I feel ultimately, that the game is an unparalled masterpiece of ARPG. However, its mordernization needs to better accommodate a wider audience who may havr significant commitments in their personal or professional lives. As well as new players (like my girlfriend) who may have different motivational schemas. Sometimes the bottoming out of RNG has no bounce, and its a problem

It really just boils down to “do you enjoy the gameplay.” If the answer is no, then you should probably find a different game. If all you enjoy is trying to reach a “end” then it’s not going to be a fun experience. You really need to “enjoy” the grind.
