How does the Chronicle work?

First thing I noticed was items I 'd already obtained that I brought in from before the update don’t count.

Second thing I noticed is not even every item I was picking up was counting. I found a Cleglaw’s Tooth and that registered, but then I found a Cathan’s ring and that did not. What do I have to do for the item to show up in the chronicle?

You have to ID or be in a party where another player IDs a drop from the same game, as I understand. Items will have green text indicating that they are eligible.

NVM I found i t in the list, It just didn’t show up right away for some reason.

For the item to show up in the chronicle it must be identified, either via Tome/Scroll of Identify or Deckard Cain. One really clear way to see that an item has triggered a new entry in your chronicle is when you ID it manually you’ll see a sort of “shimmering” animation akin to what happens when you combine the two parts of the Horadric Staff for Act 2’s quests. You’ll also get this animation for any newly discovered items that have been identified by Cain the first time you open your inventory.

If you identified the Cathan’s Seal it’ll show up in your Set section, subsection “Accessories”. It’ll also tell you when you obtained the item and what dropped it.

The chronicle is a bit unintuitive in how it’s arranged. As noted above certain items are really buried and you have to go looking for them. I wish the “rewards” section gave you the rewards after getting X percentage of available item types ID’d or crafted, not all of them. The RNG for getting all of any of the three categories is just too high and would take a solo player years.

So does it have to have been dropped in the game it was ID’d in? If people buy/trade unid’d items will they get credit here or does everything have to be found either by you or someone in your party in that very game for it to count as stated in a previous post?

Tell me about it. I’ve played on and off since the beginning and even if the chronicle knew about every item i’ve ever collected I still wouldn’t have everything in any of these categories. The rune word section would probably be the most complete, and even then I’ve probably made maybe 80% of them at one point (I’ve never seen or even bought a Zod so that rules out anything with that, etc

I will see I’d like to see a current/total count displayed instead of just percentages for each category.

I’m surprised there isn’t a category here for creating every type of Crafted Item. Though to be fair, that would probably be the easiest one to complete.

For runes and runewords, does it show runewords you have made or can make? Do I have to craft and enigma or will having the runes trigger it?

Runewords appear in the list when you create them. It’s not enough to simply have the materials. You also have to socket the runes yourself, you won’t get credit if you trade/buy an already made runeword.

Thanks, was kind of hoping it would show combos you could make with what you have. I havent bought the DLC yet, so really cannot check out some of that new QoL stuff personally

I can see that, but it’s not really the purpose. It’s basically meant to be more like an achievement system since there are even rewards for filling everything in.

Thanks, will probably grab it this weekend and check it out thoroughly

So this means new possible activity where team of 8 people try to find the grail as fast as possible?

Not that I know of. As long as it was dropped after the current patch went live it is eligible to trigger a chronicle update upon identifying it.

You have to actually craft it. You can test it with a very cheap (if you haven’t already made one this patch) Stealth runeword (Tal + Eth in two socket chest armor). It’ll be aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the way at the bottom of the runewords list, probably because it’s literally the easiest one to make.

Havent purchased the DLC yet, tonight after work for sure, just a little gun shy playing with the reset in less than a week

One of the reasons I ask is because the chronicle records what dropped the item, which I figure it wouldn’t be able to do in this situaiton, unless that information is actually saved with the item itself.

I ID’d a stone of Jordan earlier and it didn’t add it to the chronicle. Are some items not in it?

It’s definitely in there. I suspect it does in fact have to happen in the game it was found in.

Testing the new content and features now gives you a head start for the next ladder season. That way you aren’t going in cold turkey.

It likely is saved with the item itself, since saving that in a separate (and entirely new) database would get prohibitively expensive in terms of storage long term on Blizzard’s end. It’s more likely that each item’s header now contains data specific to the information shown in the chronicle, stored in a predetermined format, and including a timestamp, which is read into the chronicle and put in a human readable format for display.

That’s easy enough to test. I’ll just play until I get a set or unique item and then once I do I’ll close the game and start a new one. If it doesn’t save the information in the chronicle, that will confirm your suspicion. If it does, then the person above you may be looking in the wrong section (jewelery is kind of buried in subsections in the chronicle).

Edit: You don’t have to ID the item in the same game. I got lucky and my first run of the Cow King netted me a set kris (part of a new set). I closed that game and ID’d the kris in the next game I opened. Its text still showed “Eligible for the chronicle” before I ID’d it and it showed up in the chronicle once ID’d.

If you’re having trouble finding items you know you’ve ID’d, use the filter at the upper right corner of the chronicle window and change “All” to “Discovered” and you’ll have a much easier time locating the items you’ve ID’d. Keep in mind that items you previously had before the patch that had not yet been ID’d will not be saved to the chronicle. Only newly dropped items will be eligible to be saved.

Does it apply for runewords too? Like if someone in the party crsft it, I gets it too

Agreed. Also you cannot carry forward progression from Softcore into hardcore. meaning that you have two separate game modes to try and achieve this collection.

What we don’t know for sure is what is carried from non ladder into ladder.

For crafting every runeword, does anyone have a list of all the runes we will need and all the bases we will need simply to complete this achievement?

It doesn’t work. it wipes randomly every so often..
